Yesterday around 3:30 p.m., a fire blew up east of Covelo off Indian Dick Road and Mendocino Pass Road. The Eel Fire as it is now called is estimated to be around 856 acres. Residents near Mendocino Pass Road were evacuated.

According to Cal Fire, the blaze started as a structure fire that spread into surrounding vegetation. Ten structures are threatened as well as a campground

Yesterday’s quick response appears to have helped quite a bit. Scanner traffic indicates some units are being released off the fire.

SMOKE:

UPDATE 2:32 p.m.: Fire is now at 1000 acres and command has transferred to Mendocino National Forest.

It was not a hash lab stop spreading false information. I was nearby when it broke out, someones BBQ tipped over which caught their trailer on fire then spread to the surrounding vegetation.

Probably become beloved by a certain group. Even a tourist attraction. Keeping street signs would be impossible. Some people never learn to control themselves.

I’m not sure but it’s possible that the reason for sending forces back to the Mendo complex is because of the transfer of the eelfire to the NFS. The fire is still listed as 1000 acres with 0% containment and ground conditions are still hot and breezy, so the fire dying down may not be happening. However, the head of the fire appears to be heading for recent fire scars in the MNF and this too may also be a factor.

A new fire near Ukiah on Vichy Springs road has recently flared up, but is being hit hard by CalFire and local agencies and appears to be stopped at 5 acres.

Mendo sheriffs just put out a press release stating that because of the growing fire an evacuation area has been set up , so I would say yes it is still ongoing. The fire is heading east away from Covelo.

Calfire ‘this is no longer a Calfire incident’, now it’s USFS, and is not yet on their website that I can tell, so, yeah, it doesn’t technically exist.

Now up on MNF website

http://www.fs.usda.gov/detail/mendocino/news-events/?cid=FSEPRD590050

from the site

A new wildland fire started Tuesday, July 31 on the Covelo district of the Mendocino National Forest approximately 15 miles east of the town of Covelo off County Road M1 and Mendocino Pass Road. It is called the Eel fire and it is estimated at 1,000 acres.

The Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office has issued mandatory evacuations of all residences between Black Butte River, Anthony Peak, Forest Service Rd. M4, and Forest Service Rd. M1 to mile marker 10. Forest Highway 7 remains open at this time, but be aware that the situation could change quickly.

Resources assigned to the incident include six engines, four water tenders and several aircraft including two helicopters and air tankers as needed. The fire is moving east, southeast on the forest.

The cause of the blaze is under investigation. Please call 530-640-1168 for more information.

All these fires, and no clouds in the sky. Is everyone driving around on flat tires or do we have an infestation of fire bugs?

The link below is to a ArcGIS real time heat sensor map. If you zoom out a bit and go east of Covelo you will see the most recent hot spots of the Eel Fire. The good news is that there isn’t a lot of heat being generated and I suspect that is because if you go to google maps satellite view of the area the fire is burning in an area that has numerous burn scars from recent fires with pockets of unburnt vegetation. This will hopefully prevent the fire from growing too much beyond the immediate area unless strong winds come up and carry the fire further east past the burn scars. If the winds die down tonight NFS should have a good handle on this one soon, unless enough resources aren’t available. If they don’t and it gets east past Anthony Ridge or southeast past the M4 then it could turn into another monster on the MNF. Good news is that Covelo isn’t in danger.
