Press release from the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office Drug Enforcement Unit (DEU):

Following a weeklong operation investigating illegal cannabis cultivation in southern Humboldt County, the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office Drug Enforcement Unit (DEU) has served 12 search warrants, eradicated approximately 46,486 growing marijuana plants and destroyed over 1,400 pounds of processed marijuana.

On July 26, 2018, deputies served one search warrant on a parcel in the Panther Gap area of southern Humboldt County. The parcel did not possess nor was in the process of actively obtaining a commercial cannabis permit with the County of Humboldt.

During the service of the warrant, deputies located and eradicated approximately 3,018 growing marijuana plants. Assisting agencies found the following violations:
– One water diversion violation (up to $8,000 fine per day)
– One deposition of trash into a stream violation (up to $8,000 fine per day)
– Grading without a permit violations (up to $10,000 fine per day, per violation)
– Building code violations (up to $10,000 fine per day, per violation)
– Improper storage and removal of solid waste violations (up to $25,000 fine per day, per violation)
– Commercial cannabis ordinance violations (up to $10,000 fine per day, per violation)

No arrests were made during the service of the warrant. Additional violations with civil fines are expected to be filed by the assisting agencies.

The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office thanks the following agencies for assisting in the service of this week’s warrants: California Department of Fish and Wildlife, Humboldt County Environmental Health and HAZMAT Unit, California State Water Board and Humboldt County Planning and Building Department.

Anyone with information about related criminal activity is encouraged to call the Sheriff’s Office at (707) 445-7251 or the Sheriff’s Office Crime Tip line at (707) 268-2539.

Holy CHIT! Water consumption estimate anyone? I guessing 5000 gallons a day.

Judging by the size of the pots (look to be 65 gal) and plant size I’d say they should only be using about 5 gal per pot every 3 days or so. After counting the rows and multiplying I’d say there’s approximately 2,400 pots/plants, give or take. So by those numbers they should be using around 12,000 gal of water ever 3 days or so which would be around 3,000 gal a day. Mind you, only idiots water every day. Now that 3,000 gal every 3 days will only go up as it,e goes on. My thing is, what idiot has plants that small in pots that big and at this time of year!

Agreed for the most part. If it is a yabo grow those grows have lots of runoff out of the pots. Most likely they water twice a day if it’s one guy that’s doing a lot of the work or just a couple it could take them several days to work through those if they’re not on drip. Then add to that any water for washing bathing cooking and trying to keep a little in storage. I would say this parcel is definitely a water hog. If they weren’t taking it all out of the creeks. Their delivery rate bet they were having a truck up that road almost everyday. I’m sure the neighbors loved it.

Soom idiots have to warter every day like when its 106 degrees and your plants are huge and drink warter like a alcoholic drinks beer on a hot day mine like about 15 20 gallons on a hot day

i’ve worked several places where it’s that hot and worse sometimes and I’ve never had to water twice a day ever and we’ve always produced amazing top shelf product. You figure about a half a gal of water per five gallons of soil give or take. When the weather is really hot “and dry” then a little more than half per 5 gal soil but most of the places around here that get to such high temps still are like 80% RH so honestly you were actually probably over watering, not so much to where it showed but still giving more than necessary.

It’s odd that you took the time to count just the rows showing when the report says 50,000 plants total(counting ones not pictured). Your math is very off since you chose to use a made up plants number.

It was 50,000 collectively from all the warrants they served. They didn’t find those all on one property. Read a little more carefully next time.

Plants would die if you gave them 10 gallons a day. Ever heard of root rot.

Exactly, trust that most newbies don’t understand how it works and that the plant actually does most of its growing just before the soil goes dry and needs to be watered. In that though, it all depends on the size of the plant, amount of soil, climate, elevation etc. I’ve worked with plants that need much more water than 10 gal, more like 30 give or take but still that’s not 30 a day, more like 30 gal every 3-4 days. Optimal conditions and practices would be to get in 2 waterings/feedings a week. Sure beyond that everyone has their own way as in feed, feed, water or feed, water, water etc. But again 2 waterings/feedings in a 7 day period is best. That’s why I suggest half a gal of water (with or without food) per 5 gal of soil, from there you adjust due to all the variables to get 2 in 7

Aero, hydro, aguaponics use 1/10 water,1/6 fertilizer. Regular farming needs much water to wash excess fertilizer into rivers.pot ,premixed fertilizers are the most expensive and thought out.verticle farming uses 1/10 area.inert medium works with good fertilizer.pot fertilizers, designed by specialists,is cause of harmful algal bloom.land ownership on paper and gold and silver make land where inca live not theirs.though they walk on,live on and have sacred spots.this causes unhappiness world wide.to make America great is to cause small groups ,world wide to use terror as a military tactic.bugs and drugs next. Someone has to supply all the states where prohibition is still in place. Cannabis exports for free states where recreational Cannabis is legal to State stupid enough to maintain cannabis prohibition is a multi-billion-dollar a year industry. There’s no way police will ever stop this until cannabis is legalized Nationwide. There’s just too much money at stake. I have to ask, had these cops solved every murder, rape and violent crime and we’re sitting on their hands looking for something else to do? If not this is just pure stupidity.

I agree . How do law enforcement feel good about themselves when there’s murders and stealing and rapes that are unsolved and murderers and rapists walking around free to commit the next violent crime while the law enforcement with 30 officer groups are ganging up to cut a plant down they should gang up like that to investigate violent crimes. I would support that effort and so would everyone else on this site and in this area. Everyone I think would actually agree on that and appreciate that.

It’s not stupidity. It’s giving the people that didn’t sign up a reason to think twice. That they can’t just come here and blow up huge scenes and get away with it anymore unless there getting permitted. Yes most of these massive grows have been here for years with little done about it but better late then never I guess. Prices going up this year, I’m loving every second of it

Smart pots are great at reducing root rot and goofers. They also increase oxygen to roots and water run off. The cons are increased water needs because of hot roots. I’ve had holes, trenches and raised beds. For full term I like them. But 65 gallon are so small you’d have water twice a day when the roots tap

The pots pictures aren’t smart pots,, you want to try to get in 2 watering/feedings in a 7 day period and with smart pots it makes it a bit easier to do so as well the benefits the other poster posted. Btw nope, not a thing I said was wrong and overly big plants are like jacked up growdozers, compensating for something? 65 gal of soil is more than enough, personally I’d rather do everything dep in 7gal bags, guaranteed I can produce a far superior product like that as compared to a 10lb plant

I have to wonder how long it takes to build facilities for, and to plant 50,000 marijuana plants? How much does it cost?

It is the most amazing waste of effort and resources that I can think of!

Next year, if you are not gonna get a permit, just donate the time and money to mental health services, or to your local hospital! You will feel so much better! Much better than when the DTF comes for your plants…

If you like legalization so much you must like the look of farms like this. This is the future you voted for. Honestly I think this is a picture of honeydew farms… the first permitted farm in the county (google it- it’s a field of pots looks just like this^^)
I have no problem per we with legalization or not, but anyone who thinks that all this legal weed is going to all be smoked in CA is stupid.
I know this year a lot is still being diverted to the black market, but will that keep happening? Or is the legal market going to go off a cliff?

Time to confiscate the land to pay for the finds, law enforcement costs, and remediation costs. Land owners that lease out their property and then deny knowledge of what was going on should also be responsible for the remediation costs.

The landowners are responsible for the fines and remediation costs. All the abatement letters are addressed to the landowners, not whoever they are leasing it to. The days of leasing out your place and taking no risk are over.

Outlaw Smart Pots!!
What could use more water than a smart pot which wicks away 50% of the water by direct evaporation from the bag. These bags are the very reason that the Eel River and tributaries are going drier, they use 8-10 times as much water as planting in the ground as the water is constantly evaporating away. There is a direct correlation to the dewatering of the local streams and the introduction of these dumb pots which grow shitty bud since the plant is warmer than desireable and the plant os constantly lookikg for more water which has evaporated and stunted the plants.

SmartPots only!!! Who cares about the rivers and animals? We don’t need them anyway. Sarcasm but I do like smartpots and use them. As anything there’s a right way and a wrong way, runoff is actually easy to contain and use in your veggie garden. Btw I’ve never had stunted plants due to smartpots as well the plant does most of its growing when the soil is almost dry and needs to be watered again
