Press release from the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office:

On July 25, 2018, deputies with the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office Drug Enforcement Unit (DEU) served four search warrants to investigate illegal cannabis cultivation in the Rancho Sequoia area of Southern Humboldt. The following agencies assisted in the service of the warrants: California Department of Fish and Wildlife, Humboldt County Environmental Health and HAZMAT Unit, California State Water Board and Humboldt County Planning and Building Department.

Four parcels were investigated during the service of the warrants. The parcels did not possess nor were in the process of actively obtaining a commercial cannabis permit with the County of Humboldt.

During the service of the warrants, deputies eradicated approximately 22,427 growing cannabis plants. Deputies also seized and destroyed approximately 24.5 pounds of processed cannabis and approximately 184 pounds of cannabis shake.

Between the four parcels, assisting agencies found the following violations:
– Five water pollution violations (up to $20,000 fine per day, per violation)
– Two depositing trash in or near a waterway violations (up to $20,000 fine per day, per violation)
– Three water diversion violations (up to $8,000 fine per day, per violation)
– Two failure to submit a hazmat business plan violations (up to $70,000 fine per day)
– Failure to prevent a hazardous waste release (up to $70,000 fine per day)
– Failure to report a hazardous waste release (up to $70,000 fine per day)
– Failure to label hazardous waste (up to $70,000 fine per day)
– Mismanagement of lead acid batteries (up to $70,000 fine per day)
– Failure to take spill prevention control or counter measures (up to $70,000 fine per day)
– Discharge of waste oil onto land (up to $70,000 fine per day)
– Failure to have secondary containment on a diesel tank (up to $70,000 fine per day)
– Commercial cannabis ordinance violations (up to $10,000 fine per day)
– Multiple improper storage and removal of solid waste violations (up to $25,000 fine per day, per violation)
– Multiple grading without a permit violations (up to $10,000 fine per day, per violation)
– Multiple building code violations (up to $10,000 fine per day, per violation)

No arrests were made during the service of the warrants. Additional violations with civil fines are expected to be filed by the assisting agencies.
Anyone with information about these cases or related criminal activity is encouraged to call the
Sheriff’s Office at (707) 445-7251 or the Sheriff’s Office Crime Tip line at (707) 268-2539.

I don’t think the sheriff really wants anyone to be there when they arrive. Enforcement has moved to using civil penalties over criminal ones. If they make plenty of noise on arrival, anyone there can flee, taking their firearms and pitbulls with them. They avoid arrest and the sheriff can do his thing free from oversight.

They literally don’t want to arrest anyone. It makes for too much paperwork etc. It truly is only about the money, even when it comes to the environmental violations, the only thing that matters to them is what price tag can be put on what

Why are there no arrests, you ask? Really?
The outlaws run away and/or hide. Pretty simple.

To arrest someone, the law would have to find them at the scene. Naturally, outlaws don’t stick around when the law rides into the yard.

Yes there’s definitely issues with these spots but honestly nothing that can’t really be fixed especially in comparison with the corporations that produce probably more than half of what you purchase every day. Btw more money stays here than you think but the next time you go somewhere don’t gas up or eat or rent a hotel etc, god forbid you spend your money anywhere else than the town you live in

Having seen a number of sites during my real estate days I do know that pre synthetic motor oil is the worst. You spill enough motor oil they used to have to excavate the soil and ship it to Bakersfield. Diesel is toxic but it does break down over time. That was awhile ago and don’t know if this holds true. Does anyone know where synthetic falls in toxicity and persistence ?

I used to work at the Ie House in Garberville when I was a kid. ( ice house became Chautauqua, became asian restaurant). I used tongs just like those to throw blocks of ice into the three horse power ice crusher. Once the tongs were set, ice could be carried by one handle. We sold crushed ice to all the bars and restaurants in town, and there were lots of them, we used to have tourists that stopped in town by the droves, you have noooo idea how popular Garberville was as a tourist stop. Ah, the good old days!

Tongs similar to that were used in logging and hay boisting. You can buy a variety of them on ebay.

I try not to comment on marijuana cultivation, but what about the environmental damage? How could anybody use any of those grower’s weed? The solution to pollution is dilution… this kind of crap needs to be diluted. A portion of Measure ‘z’ money is used to clean up this kind of environmental damage. Wouldn’t it be nice to be able to spend that money on roads?

I hate such scenes with a passion.
Aside from the odious plastic crap, which i would love to see outlawed completely–okay, i’m being a bit silly, but in my fantasy world, it would be forbidden to import petroleum-based plastic sheeting for “agriculture” on general ecological and aesthetic grounds–
Aside from that, all the fans in the greenhouse. Clue, dudes: if you didn’t have the stuff under plastic to begin with, you wouldn’t need the fans! Fans=noise, heat, unnecessary use of electricity. And there’s the wind outside, ever poised to do all that cooling, mildew eradication, and bug dispelling– for free. The lack of common sense and natural economy is astounding.

Well you kind of need the plastic sheeting to create an environment that lets you get three crops a year instead of just one. Because of plastic sheeting many countries are not starving, you think we have a problem with hoopers check this out

I might be “being a bit silly” but, I have a tendency to agree with you.

However, to switch to paper products requires cutting a tree, or more logically a bush. The north coast of California has the most bio-mass that it has had in the last several hundreds of years. If that biomass could be harvested, wisely, we could have all the paper products that we could use and reduce fire danger. The indigenous people used to burn the forests any time that trees were close enough together to burn. The world seems to have survived.

I would be the first to agree that some bio-regions are precious and unique and should not be touched.

The next problem is that we won’t allow a paper mill to be built because of the pollution that they cause. So, why do we buy paper products from countries that pollute more that the U.S ever did?

The real solution would be to convince young women to not have babies, and men to stop helping them. The world is woefully over-populated and consumptive. I also think that pigs should fly, but that’s just me… Apparently.

I always thought Humboldt would create the first hemp paper mill, or hemp rope or hemp cement industry, using the stems& sticks that only get burned or composted anyway. What happened? Don’t the powers that be study business models? The old days were so so sweet. The new days could’ve been guided by enlightened practices and industry, but apparently there’s a huge lack of vision. So sad.

The U.S. Government already did extensive studies on weed long ago they have known for 40+ years Weed can be used for fuel for cars clothing food building materials medicines the list goes on .. They spent around 4.3 million and still won’t use or admit to these studies and the potential of this plant . I have read the study findings and many other studies the have done . The U.s. citizens should really wake up to the waste of our government we pay for it all after all.

@For Sure The only hemp paper mill in our area was in South Legget. It was called The Church Of The Living Tree. The Evanescent Press. The gentleman John Stahl had applied for the DEA permit many moons ago to operate. He would get stalks from local growers and process them into a beautiful product. This was in the early 90’s. Last I heard he got arrested in Cambodia.

Arrested for being a pervert. His production was tiny. Hemp cement is light and strong.

Tiotom

John Stahl is a child molester who used the lure of hemp paper making to recruit his victims. He fled the country to avoid prosecution. He was arrested in Cambodia many years later for the same types of offenses. Returned to the United States and sent to San Quentin. He was then released on parole but was rearrested for the same types of violations. As I understand, he is back in San Quentin, where, hopefully he will rot. My youngest son was one of his victims.

I actually spent a brief time up at Stahl’s Church of the Living Tree, a single month, back in ’03. It was a bad scene. Actually thought it was some kind of neo-Druid trip, as advertised on his website. More like a front for nefarious activities. Indeed, I really didn’t know he was into underage boys until I saw his mug on the Mendocino County Sheriff’s and Kym Kemp’s website when it was announced that he was wanted. As for Tiotom’s comment, I think he went to Lompoc, not Quentin. Didn’t spend that much time there. And, as for his re-arrest for parole violation (naughty stuff on his hard drive), I think he’s been back out for a while for that. Behaving himself a lot more, I would imagine.

I agree, Ernie, that in short, if people would quit pushing out the babies, we could do things at a sane pace. Imagine the population numbers of 1900 with the technology of today… we could have forests and rivers and slow-made (quality) everything.

But now anything that’s short-sighted and unsustainable is defended with “Millions of lives depend upon it.” What about future lives? What about quality of life? There are definitely greedy forces at work who use propaganda to promote this idea that we must reproduce exponentially. It’s a vicious circle of ignorance, reproduction, craziness, and more reproduction.

No. Simplistic, black-and-white thinking never solved anything. Although simple minds are more susceptible to propaganda about the desirability of certain behaviors. It’s time to change the propaganda. Those anti-choice, pro-“family” “Christian” radio stations, for instance, have way too much power in encouraging people unprepared for the challenges of parenting to have every kid their raging alcohol- or meth-stimulated hormones suggest. (Sorry about all the quotation marks, but i just can’t use some words without acknowledgment of the irony.)

Fast-growing pine trees provide the primary raw material used to make corrugated cardboard. The largest packaging companies own thousands of acres of land where trees are matured, harvested, and replaced with seedlings.

Many small streams don’t have fish in them anymore because of logging practices. Out 36, small streams used to be over 7 feel deep and are now barely a foot deep. Fish now swim across 36 when it floods. Logging destroyed the ground and heavy rains silted them in. That, in turn, carries to the Van Duzen and then to the Eel. Destruction of watershed due to chemicals and fuel are fairly recent in the big picture.

Exactly.
Where are all the enviromentalists?
These grows are killing the environment more so than loggers ever did. They cut, bulldozed and replanted. Lots of gravel in the stream beds but nothing like this crap that’s going on now.
With all the grow fertilizer and bloom fertilizer getting into the natural waterways, it’s no wonder that we have massive toxic blue-green alge blooms following the streams all the way to the ocean. I’ve never seen the ocean shut down to crabbing. Nor taking razor clams at clam beach. It has happened suddenly in the last couple of years. Abalone season over… Etc.
Sure logging did damage but it has never affected the ocean.
Where are the enviromentalists? Do they not care? No! They smoke pot! Why should they care? Where is the Sierra Club dishing out money to protesters? I’m sure the money is there but how many of those protesters would protest against pot?

Mr Guest:

Unfortunately, the past is over. All we are left with is the decades it will take to clean up the mess these filthy fellows have left behind.

Now we presume compliance with current regulations will occur, but will it? To set up and operation like the one above, took huge capital. Are these folks victims of the times, or do they deserve to be eradicated?

For my money, every time we see a set of photos like these, I wonder: How many more are there? I estimate in the thousands, and I presume that the filthy dirty grows far outnumber the clean and compliant ones…

At this time I urge folks who want to survive: DON’T TRADE IN BLACK MARKET WEED. DON’T BUY IT, SELL IT, OR TOLERATE IT. DIRTY WEED WILL RUIN YOUR INDUSTRY AND TANK YOUR ECONOMY.

Good luck growing in this environment for the long run!

Grow your own. Pretty simple. BUT

That doesn’t stop the cartels from raping our environment. California has such lax laws it’ll never stop. Illegal aliens get nothing but a ‘hand-slap’ and a ‘don’t come back’ handshake.
They come back, grow more pot, get caught, get a ‘hand-slap’, apologize and say “yes sir, I promise I won’t do it again”. I’ll take the proper measures and fill out the paperwork and wait my turn.
And they’re back next week, high- fiving their buddies. Middle finger high in the air.
And I’m not talking about just one country.

Who was involved in THIS?

She was found “randomly” at a residence of a Bosnian in Fortuna but of course they don’t know each other and there is no connection ha ha ha! She has nothing to do with huge Bulgarian grows here because…we don’t have huge Bulgarian grows ha ha ha!! The local law enforcement has helped to cover up a murder that should implicate huge Bulgarian grows because our local law enforcement is protecting these grows and they have been for a decade now at least. Yet here they are eradicating all these other grows so boy aren’t they just swell?! It stinks to high heaven…our county has become a criminal enterprise zone

Filthy rotten pigs! This is exactly what we have to eradicate. For all those that are saying why has it taken this long, and where was the government when this all started 10-20 years ago?????

Guess what, the government was there, but all the So Hum crowd did not want to report anything, the community saw what was going on but ignored it. Put their heads in the sand and said, they are just growing weed, no big deal, its all natural.

The hill community is hugely responsible for what has happened to the environment, their collective lack of action over the years has allowed the greedy mega growers to move in and destroy what was once a great little scene, now it is blown up and has killed thousands of critters (fish, marten, fisher, hawks, owls, etc.) and we have nobody else to blame but ourselves.

Reap what you sow.

I agree with a lot of what you said. But really all this handwringing about the environment being destroyed is overblown. I’ve cleaned up properties like this. It’s a couple dumpsters and a skid steer, and within a year it’s FINE! You know how much diesel gets spilled all over the place at any given time? I had a logger tell me the other day about how he had spent his youth in the woods falling huge redwoods, and then ten minutes later saying how bad the growers are for clearing a few acres of tanoak, and how the environment is destroyed because of the growers. Nonsense..
That being said I do really hate these messy growers who have no respect for the land. We (responsible landowners) need to do a better job policing our neighborhoods. Run these bad actors out. Should have started doing it a long time ago, I agree with Bill on that.

So the answer is to snitch them out? Just as they could’ve done to you “responsible” growers in the short time before this compliance/permit period? Or should you just mind your own business as bad will weed itself out in due time? 2 wrongs don’t make a right so everyone mind their own and let nature take its course. Aren’t you all hitching about nature being screwed with?!?! Then stop

I would not call the cops or fish and game. That’s not what I’m talking about. I mean, make them leave. It’s not that hard to do. Just gotta be creative. If we’d done a better job of keeping the bad players out, then the the feds and others wouldn’t be up our asses so bad. So many murders, trashy scenes and basically raping and pillaging of the land that people are demanding enforcement. You probably haven’t been around here very long but if you had been you’d be able to see the difference between how it is and how it was. Twenty years ago there weren’t baseball fields of light coming from every flat in the mountains.

I agree. All you have to do is clean up the trash, put an outslope on the road, stop driving on it, and stop using water. The land will heal itself quickly and the fish will come back. Unless there’s a lot of nasty pesticides and petroleum products. That could have residual effects for a long time.

Think of all the pieces of land the loggers raped that are amazing and beautiful now.

I would agree, and remember that when they do this light dep they are using clones which are dripping with eagle 20 or avid or whatever. You need that to fight mites which infest indoor weed (that’s where the clones come from)
No pesticides or fungicides are used in seed grown outdoor. Or not needed I should say, some idiots might still use them if they don’t know better.

Outdoor scenes use way more chemicals than indoor grows. Each of course has there share of pigs that slather on the pesticides and fungicides and chemical based fertilizers. None of that matters much if the market forces keep eroding prices. Besides the cost what is the problem that people are having with the testing?

That is an opinion based comment and just another generalization or categoration of everyone growing (whatever you want to call it) like so many people love to do. It happens so much on here that it makes most comments have no merit whatsoever. There is not one single thing that all growers do other than grow. It’s too bad the average citizen doesn’t seem to get that.

Wrong-o. Don’t comment if you don’t know what your talking about. Outdoor probably uses way more electricity too right?

Out door grows certainly don’t use more chemicals than indoor. I fact you don’t need chemicals for either. I have grown thousands of pounds indoor and out. The only product I have sprayed this year and sparingly is Plant Therapy which is just soybean oil, alcohol and peppermint oil. I only use 100% organic amendments for fertilizer because that is all you need.

What?!?! Just because someone uses clones in no way means they dip them in any of that garbage! There’s no need to, for what?!?! As well your statement that “no pesticides or fungicides are needed with seed grown outdoor” is complete bs! You couldn’t possibly believe that just because you plant a seed outdoor that it’s completely immune to fungus or pests. I’ve seen tons of outdoor seed plants completely infested by russets due to CalTrans releasing them to eradicate invasive grasses and tons of outdoor seed plants with PM and molds and I’ve also seen plenty of farmers that grow said plants spray them with the pesticides and fungicides you speak of. Your comment is extreme misinformation

Also, I’m under the impression that you yourself grow so let me ask you, what do you recommend for a russet mite infestation? What’s the “heady” product that’s legal now but most likely won’t be in the future? SaferSoap, Trifecta or Venerate? Or are you too “heady” for even those? Seriously curious though, all bs aside. So you’re growing the best, most organic crop ever!! Even the bamboo you use to keep your branches up is AAA Organic, harvested by organic vegans on the shores of Oganictopia but somehow even though you took some bad ass crazy comprehensive preventative plan and stuck to it but damn it all you now have a seriously bad russet or broadmite infestation. What does Emily do in that situation? Heady organic inquiring minds want to know

Lol I almost spit my water out laughing too. So if you grow from seed your plants are automatically immune to pest, viruses, and molds?? Lmao. I’ve read her comments and thought they held ground till that. Just the same old thing every grower here thinks their herbs the best cause blah blah blah. Please at this point it’s more about who you know then how good your herb if you want to stay afloat. Some ppl with aaa can’t move it while the guy with garbage but good connects is fine. It sucks but it’s how it is…

And FYI growing from seed introduces a slew of unknowns from herming, weak genetics, and russet and broad mites can be dormant on seeds…..

Also keeping an indoor organic is way easier than an outdoor. Majority of indoors here are small so it’s easy to just start with a clean slate. On a big outdoor if you get infested clearing out all soil pots beds is hell you’re just gonna plant then dump the pesticides on it all…or at least most people.

Indoor or outdoor? Chemical or organic? Pesticide and fungicide or not? The first important factor on any of those is strain. Plain and simple. Next it’s all about preventing those problems not fixing them.

Hey.. Look I don’t need to explain myself to idiots. If you know, you know, ya know? Seed plants grown outdoors (with no lights ever) will not have bug problems, ever. You will lose about 1% to stem rot, and you will get about 5% loss to botrytis depending on the amount of rain in the fall or whatever.
Less overhead, less work, better product and no chemicals or plastic.. well almost none. Have a good night.

Thank you Emily for expounding on my point and providing experienced and well stated information!
With the sale price of cannabis falling, these (economic) choices will likely, again become the favored way to farm. And at some point, there can be a pointed public campaign to raise awareness about the environmental considerations regarding the use of plastic (similar to the ‘Put ‘Em In The Sun!’ campaign of some years back).

Diatamacious Earth.

Dust the plants while early and young a few times.

Russet, Broad and Cyclamem mites will not establish. It’s not a poison so they won’t build a tolerance.

No sprays. Totally clean.

The point is, organic outdoor is appreciably LESS dependent. Certainly in the growing stages.

Industrial disease, not unliked the mikitary industrial complex, or Big Pharma Industry, is not a part of nature. I’ve never added or sprayed any petrochemical products on anything i’ve planted thru to harvest.

I guess I need some education. I was born and raised in Sohum and my family moved to Maine in the early 80’s. The most plants we ever grew was 70, and it was a lot of work! Culling males ect..ect. How the hell do they do it with thousands of plants?

The Declaration of Independence, the Constitution for the united States of America, and the Bill of Rights were penned on hemp paper. Paper production does not equal forest destruction for dollars. That’s just silly.

~aside, i have a 1914 gold backed federal bank note with a hemp harvest pictured on the reverse left side. It’s really pretty and made out of, yep, hemp.

They keep trying to get it back: https://www.statesmanjournal.com/story/news/2018/07/10/mitch-mcconnell-bill-hemp-cousin-marijuana-could-soon-legal-across-us/760532002/

That would solve both paper and plastic problems in one fell swoop.

At least Cal-Fire didn’t show up this time… Lord knows they are needed at the Carr Fire!

All of these environmental charges… maybe the government should be fined 1BN per day for not creating fire breaks to protect the environment from burning down…

Wildfires make these salad processors look harmless by comparison… “Tree Removal” is actually not a threat but a much needed environmentally positive activity at this stage IMO (think Tanoak firewood, not Redwoods or old growth fir)

Some statistics (i see no way to edit the numbers into columns that transfer at ‘post comment’ time.)

THE HEMP REGION
Extent and Characteristics of the Hemp-growing Region of the United States.
INDEPENDENCE, Saturday, Aug. 8, 1857.
There is a region of Missouri of rapidly rising fame and importance, gaining for itself a State and a National reputation, which we will define as the “Region of the hemp culture.”

Specially favored by nature in its geographical locality, climate, navigation, and superlative fertility, this region has become the seat of a hemp culture which has a strong, organized and National foundation. The hemp culture receives special attention in twenty counties bisected by the Missouri River, and all adjacent to its two shores. They form a belt of land east and west, enclosed between the thirty-eighth and fortieth degrees of latitude. Here is the production of these counties in hemp, flax and tobacco, in order as they lie along the river—census of 1850:
Hemp, tons. Flax, lbs. Tobacco, lbs.
Jackson . . . . . . . . . . . . . 361 1,443 38,920
Lafayette . . . . . . . . . . . . . 2,462 6,807 75,035
Saline . . . . . . . . . . . . . 1,559 160 287,533
Cooper . . . . . . . . . . . . . 39 9,835 137,800
Moniteau . . . . . . . . . . . . . 11 7,621 39,550

Johnson . . . . . . . . . . . . . 65 7,670 900
Pettis . . . . . . . . . . . . . 52 2,784 1,300
Miller . . . . . . . . . . . . . 3 5,600 12,900
Platte . . . . . . . . . . . . . 4,355 420 66,000
Clay . . . . . . . . . . . . . 1,288 88,197 20,050

Carroll . . . . . . . . . . . . . 300 1,779 289,869
Charlton . . . . . . . . . . . . . 170 3,213 2,667,908
Howard . . . . . . . . . . . . . 904 16,948 3,188,122
Boone . . . . . . . . . . . . . 51 20,695 584,949

Buchanan . . . . . . . . . . . . . 1,894 620 7,850
14,173 tons, or 28,346,000 pounds/hemp

Since 1850, the hemp culture has doubled in vigor, both in the land assigned to its culture and in the application of machinery to its production and manufacture. The production of that year, within the above region, was 28,346,000 pounds, estimating the ton at 2,000 pounds; and that of the whole State 16,119 tons, or 32,238,000 pounds.

You know, I would also like to point out this is only one of the scenes they busted that day. They are just showing people the dirtiest one to make the pesky [edit] look good and growers look bad. Also.. I guarantee, even without cannabis, people like this would STILL be trashing the woods with garbage all around. Junky trashy properties happen in town too, and I do not know how many diesel tanks I see around the county that are uncontained, all the time I see them, mostly for heating or whatever. The Area around the generator though, that is real bad. I don’t like seeing this mess in the woods for sure, and diesel pollution fines should be some of the largest for sure. But many of the other fines, I find extremely erroneous, and extortion, and excessive.
