Fortuna Police Recruiting Citizens to Attend Academy

This is a press release from the Fortuna Police Department:

Fortuna Police Department is currently accepting applications for community residents wishing to attend their 16 Hour Citizens Police Academy beginning on September 26th.

The Academy will run for eight weeks, two hours per week, until November 14th, and will allow Citizens the opportunity to get a glimpse into the world of law enforcement in Fortuna.

The training is intended to help the average citizen become better informed about the inner workings of our police department, and to help them dispel some of the misunderstandings and myths that may exist about law enforcement in general.

Those selected to attend the training will learn situational awareness skills, how to be an accurate witness, why there are times that officers are unable to arrest suspects, how officer’s duties are guided by the State and US Constitution, and what constitutes a reportable crime.

They will also get a chance to learn about some of the training that our police officers undergo.

Among some of the topics that will be covered during the training are basic crime prevention techniques, what types of behaviors might be classified as “suspicious”, legal use of force, forensics and crime scene preservation, crime scene safety, police radio operations, what happens during an investigation and when is an arrest warrant issued, what is a lawful assembly, and recognizing behaviors that may indicate substance abuse.

The eight week, two hours per week, training will also help the average citizen become a more effective neighborhood watch member, and help them gain many of the basic skills needed to become a police department volunteer.

Participants will also have the opportunity of accompanying an officer on a ride-along.

All applicants’ will be screened for criminal histories, and each candidate will be notified if they have been selected to attend: Selections will be made at the discretion of the Chief of Police.

Candidates who successfully complete the training will be awarded a certificate of completion, and become eligible to become Fortuna Police Department volunteers. This training is mandatory for anyone who wishes to become a department volunteer.

However, one does not need to become a volunteer to attend. Any resident of the City of Fortuna who is over the age of 16 years of age may apply. There is no cost to attend.

Applications may be obtained by contacting Robin Paul at [email protected], or calling 725-7550, Option 0.Citizens Academy Packet 2018.
