You’re Invited to Honor WWI Veterans at the Wildwood Days Parade August 4th
This is a press release from the Rio Dell Chamber of Commerce:
As a member of the Rio Dell-Scotia Chamber of Commerce, and host to the Wildwood Day’s Parade, we would like to invite the community to come out and honor our Veterans, Saturday, August 4th. This year’s theme is ‘Armistice’ ending hostilities of WWI. Obviously there’s no more Vets alive from that era so we are inviting all Vets and their families to participate. The Parade starts at Noon Saturday with staging at 11:00 at the ‘Dentist Office Parking Lot’, North end of Town. Folks can enter a theme Float or just march. There will be prizes & gift certificates in a number of categories. Immediately following the Parade, we’ll be holding a ‘Tree Dedication’ in Memorial Park (see flyer) that will last around 45 minutes. This is a handicap accessible park. If you could get the word out, the Chamber would greatly appreciate it.

I have been listening to a podcast about WW1. It is produced by Hardcore History and is called Blueprint for Armageddon. Six episodes, each around 4 hrs. FREE! 🙂 It’s gory and sad but also informative and fascinating. If you’re interested, I’d recommend it.
The ‘Tree Dedication Ceremony’ immediately follows the Parade at the Memorial Park, directly across from City Hall. Hosted by the Mad River Community Honor Guard, there will be a Flag Raising, reading of the’ Flanders Field Poem’, MIA/POW presentation, Military Rifle Salute, bugle calls and music by the Dixie Gators. Refreshments will be served following ceremony.
Thanks, Kym –
I just found out today that my great uncle Robert A Dowd died July 18 ,1918. He was in company I 16th infinitely. He was son of Patrick J Dowd of St Louis,MO. I believe he died in the Soissons region in France. He was in the first wave of Americans. I will be going to France in the next couple of months. My grandfather John Joseph Dowd was in the 110 supply train at the same time. He lived. Anyone that knows anything of him or history please email me.
