Gasquet Ranger Station Visitor Center Now Open Saturdays (Through Labor Day Weekend)

This is a press release from the U.S. Forest Service:

GASQUET, Calif. – Gasquet District Ranger Jeff Marszal has announced that the Gasquet Ranger Station and Smith River National Recreation Area (NRA) visitor center is now open Saturdays, from 8 AM to 2 PM, through Labor Day weekend. The visitor center is also open Monday through Friday year-round, 8 AM to 4:30 PM.

“Being open at least part of the weekend ensures that we are providing the best customer service we can to our visitors,” said Marszal. “The NRA and the Smith River are special places and we want to share them with everyone, especially as we celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Wild and Scenic Rivers Act.” The Smith River is one of the largest undammed Wild and Scenic River Systems in the United States and the only major river system in California that flows freely and naturally for its entire length.

The 305,337-acre Smith River NRA was designated by Congress in 1990 to protect the area’s scenic values, natural diversity, cultural and historical attributes, wilderness, wildlife, and the Smith River watershed’s clean waters.

The visitor center, built by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) in 1938, provides information, exhibits, maps, books, and souvenirs through an agreement with the Redwood Parks Conservancy.

For more information, contact the visitor center at (707) 457-3131.
