Smokey Bear Escapes Fiery Fate When Firefighters Crush Flames Quickly
“The car flipped onto its side and hit a power pole,” she explained. “It started a wildland fire. The flames were about 15 feet high…The power went out…The wind was blowing hard. Smoke got heavier…I thought we might lose the firehouse.”
However, as the firefighters were close by, they were able to get to the flames and put them out quickly with only minor damage to the fence and pole. Power was out for a short time, according to Antony, but backup generators filled the need. The driver received minor injuries to her hand. “We had to cut her ring cut off her,” Antony explained. She was transported to Garberville Hospital.Smokey’s statue commands the Shelter Cove fields and sands still.

Run Smokey, RUN!!! ;op Too close indeed one wonders WTF is in the Air/Water/ WTF ever that is causing all these drivers to go NUTS!!! 2 wrecks in as many days here on Hwy 36 involving CRAZY ASS Drivers!!!
I’m curious about cutting the ring off her hand. Did it get stuck on the seatbelt, or part of the steering wheel, or…? Sounds horrible, whatever it was.
Swelling. Her hand was injured.
I love the deer casually strolling along…
Me, too!
Likely thinking to itself “Stupid Human Tricks”!!!
That’s sparky!
Thank goodness it didn’t burn down the fire station or any nearby homes. Thank you firefighters!!! We could not survive all of this craziness without you!
Damn! Firefighters are my heroes!
Is Smokey made from wood?
Isn’t it ironic?
He should be made of metal, I mean, it’s all about being fire ready, right?
For the record——-Smokey used to be a fir tree. Its branches kept falling on parked vehicles in our parking lot. So our resident Bruce WILLIS cut the tree down to about 7 feet and then he carved and painted it into Smokey. So that is why it is made of wood!!!!!
Cheryl, I love that bit of history. Thank you!
If the Cove is going to have a traffic accident/fire – it’s lucky it was right in front of the fire department!
