Mother Accidentally Backed Over 6-Year-Old

Press release from the California Highway Patrol:

CHP

On May 30, 2018, at approximately 240 PM, CHP Officers were dispatched to a report of a vehicle vs. a juvenile pedestrian in front of 3032 Perkins Ct. in an unincorporated area of Eureka, CA. Upon CHP arrival, it was determined that a 2013 Hyundai SUV, driven by 28 year old Jamie Bivens of Eureka, backed her vehicle out of her driveway, striking her 6 year old daughter, Lilly Bivens.

Jamie Bivens reported that she had pulled into her driveway and left her daughter buckled in the vehicle while she went in to retrieve something from the house. During the time Jamie was in the house, Lilly Bivens unbuckled herself, exited the vehicle and then walked around to the rear of the vehicle. The mother, Jamie, returned and, unaware that Lilly was now behind the vehicle, began backing out of the driveway.

Lilly was knocked to the ground and appeared to receive major injuries consisting of lacerations and abrasions to her right leg and back, as well as a possible broken right leg. Neighbors quickly responded to help and called 911. Emergency medical personnel responded to the scene and rendered aid. Lilly Bivens was subsequently transported to St. Joseph’s Hospital by City Ambulance of Eureka.

Alcohol and/or drugs are not believed to have been a factor in this collision.

Anyone with information related to this collision is asked to contact the California Highway Patrol at 707-822-5981 or 707-268-2000.

That is just horrifying. Here is hoping that she will recover quickly from her wounds and that the mom is not too hard on herself. May God bless you both.

Thanks Kim, for reporting this story. Both my kids can now unbuckle themselves and get out without help.

I’m so sorry this little girl was hurt ❣️
But… How do you safely back out of somewhere and not know that your child is not in the back seat ⁉️😞

She got back in the car and backed out without checking where the kid was. It doesn’t say she safely backed out. obviously, anything but safety occurred here.
Something like, 50 people a year are reported to kill children this way in the US. So glad this child did not sustain fatal injuries, or get flown out. It sounds like she will recover.

Maybe she thought her kids were in the house? So many variables- don’t cast stones/judge

I can see missing something if a person was preoccupied or distracted. I have lost track of where one child was because other children were demanding attention. Luckily for me, nothing bad happened but I can see where it might have.

Some cars have rear back up cameras and u literally just watch the screen in front of u. Not justifying this but accidents do happen that’s why they’re called accidents. I’m sure the mother is beating the 💩 out of her self already.

Wait! So mom gets in the car and doesn’t even say anything to her kid, doesn’t look at her, doesn’t look through back window before backing up?????

Oh, and this 6 year old! Didn’t get out to go in the house, to potty, to pet a cat, to talk to neighbors. She just got out of the SUV to hide behind it! And never looked to see mom coming? Not normal actions of either person, according to how the story is reported.
Smells too fishy!!!!

Kym, everybody has done the exact same thing. It is easy think “WOW I would never do that” while reading a story about it. The fact of the matter we all have done what in hind sight seems like the dumbest thing in the world. “Wow, that was really really stupid. I am so lucky nothing bad happened.” Smells fishy? With THREE!!! exclamation points. Pffft. Time to be happy that it seems like the child will survive with a good story for the rest of her life. Lilly,
“Mom, I want that new dress/shovel.” Mom, “No.” Lilly, “Remember that time you ran my ass over and nearly killed me?” Mom, “How many did you want?”

With kids anything can and will happen in seconds, if I told the stories of me raising my children, child welfare would be at my door! good thing there’s a statute of limitations on being stupid,

Okay just one, Ruth Lake 28 years ago my oldest son was crawling, I had an air mattress on Shore with one end in the water, my foot on the air mattress talking with my friend drinking a beer, my son had crawled to the end of the air mattress and had his head and arms in the water and his feet on the mattress literally drowning at my feet, yep we’re all stupid f***ing parents. Sometimes luck is on your side

Last one I promise, about a year-and-a-half later, same kid, we were at Disneyland going into the Pirates of the Caribbean. strangely enough there was no line, so we were briskly walking he was on my shoulders, when all of a sudden “wham” a brick Archway takes him out, he was okay I think he put his hands up. But the collective groan from the boat full of people that was passing us and witnessed it was priceless. It still amazes me that this boy grew up to be a successful productive man. I’ve always found it funny, that you have to take multiple tests to get a driver’s license, but any dumbass can have a kid

The disgruntled must have their panties in a bunch today Kym. I have always found your site to be very informative. Between John Chiv and your sites I have all the information I need. 😊 Thanks to those of you who work extremely painstaking hours sometimes, put up with ungrateful people that feel they could do better (and have no clue), all while trying to live your life. I’m not sure I could handle all that stress and respond kindly to idiots. Thanks for doing it for me lol.

Terribly concerned about this child and sorry she is hurt. Reality mom – I feel your concerns are very valid.
Everyone is acting like ‘poor mom’ but as a mom myself something isn’t right about this story. You never back out without checking everyone is buckled up, and when looking back to see if it’s all clear wouldn’t you notice your kid is missing? I have two nieces around this moms age and both are so checked out with their phones and Instagram accounts I am horrified by how they ignore their kids and everything around them. Not to mention what seems to be a generation of horrible, irresponsible drivers which i see every time I leave my house…This community just never wants to hold people accountable:(

My sentiments exactly!!! I know I an come off as a bit of an ass at times!!! But I can clearly see how this likely happened & it’s NOT entirely the Mom’s fault it’s more of a “two way dance”!!! It seems to me both are equally at fault!!!

Funny how you called reality mom a troll and then said love and light? Hypocritical to say the least. Free thought is valued in my world. Valid points made by both sides. [edit]

This reflects a common problem with responding to news articles. A reader visualizes in their mind what happened. We do that do we can learn from the story. But what one person pictures – in this commenter’s mind- is a single child in the back of a car and a mother who has nothing else to worry about- might not be true at all. Another might picture three other screaming kids already in the car, a cell phone ringing with a call the person wants to get and a mother with a headache. Which also might not be true. Yet both are responding equally to their own vision without knowing the details.

I’ve known for a long time that Kym makes her blog very community oriented. A community lives together, laughs together, and cries together. It’s one reason I come here and I appreciate what she does.

I’m so sorry to hear this story, but glad the daughter survived.

I am so glad that my newish car has a rear back-up camera as standard equipment. Don’t know if this is required in all new vehicles, but if not, it should be. Twice in the past I have had problems backing up, even though I was driving a compact station wagon with excellent visiblity. Once I nearly backed into a low metal guard lower than my rear window at the car wash in Redway. I would say I missed it by inches. (I notice these have since been removed.) The other time I did back into a low metal guard in the parking lot outside Emerald Technologies. (What it was doing there is beyond me.) I damaged my rear hatch but even though noticeably damaged, it still opened and closed. Now I always check the back-up camera and also check visually.

As of May 1, 2018 all new vehicles are required to have backup cameras.

My old vehicle does not have one. So I’d like to hear more. I can’t help wondering if a back up camera has enough field of vision to catch things coming from the sides. Like in a parking lot. If one is looking at a screen on the dash, is it more likely to miss this sort of thing?
