[UPDATE 11:17 p.m.] Motorhome Engulfed in Flames

A firetruck arrived in time to keep flames from a fully engulfed motorhome from spreading. [All photos by Mason Beach, age 12]

Roughly around 9:45 p.m., a motorhome burst into flames near the intersection of Grant Street and Broadway in Eureka. The vehicle was completely engulfed in flames and, eventually, completely destroyed.

A reader, Kory Beach, who witnessed the event reports that a distraught woman near the burning motorhome was heard calling, “My babies, my babies” in an apparent reference to pets left inside the motorhome.

Please remember that information gathered from initial reports is subject to revision as more facts become available.

UPDATE 11:17 p.m.: A video by Wade Long shows the fire burning and a small explosion can also be heard.

photos by a 12 year old, what is a 12 year old doing so close to a vehicle that could have propane or gasoline waiting to ignite?

A 12 year old boy was there because his mother stopped to offer assistance. The 12 year old boy was not in any danger. The 12 year old boys mother was part of search and rescue. The 12 year old boy takes very good pictures. I’m proud of those pictures that the 12 year old boy took

I’m so sorry for the loss of your pets. And your home. That is so hard to deal with.

I will say that looks like a POS 80s camper not unlike a lot of them parked on Grant, Summer, W Del Norte, Railroad…etc. All eyesores, litter all around, excess stuff stored in the street. Nasty smelling. Dens of illicit activity and havens for thieves and drug users. So maybe one less isn’t a bad thing. Unless that burnt carcass gets left there. That would suck.

So you are in favor of nasty looking, smelly, litter-filled, havens for drug use and crime? I feel like this isn’t really something anyone should support. Pretty sure even those people frequenting those things are like “ung, FML, it’s come to this….”

Really..

Yes all the humans are too busy actually being active in the community rather than sitting at the keyboard complaining.

If u haters pull ur heads out of ur butt and read news from (or gasp actually go to) other areas you’d know that there are thousands of street blocks right now that are full of parked rvs and cars that folks are living in. Our humbub (humboldt bubble) has popped. Welcome to the U.S.! Check out the homeless camps in santa rosa. Read about the miles and miles of vehicles folks are living in all around the bay and LA. Look at the areas in Sacramento & San Diego where thousands live and work but cannot afford housing.
Reality check:::: even if youre making 20/hr before taxes thats 38,400/year. Read the report on median housing prices by county and you’ll see how few places you can afford even rent in the state at that pay. Half that for the majority of folks making 10/hr.
Its not rocket science, the writings not just on the wall its in huge bright neon letters. By 2025 our country is going to look like 1925 fiscally.

And I thought the Rules and Regulations for Comments would thin out the trash!
I guess I was being a bit optimistic.
There seems to be a trend for people with nothing relevant to say to insist on spewing their venom where it will do the least good and possibly do some hurt.

One man’s spew is another’s enlightened comment. In this case I can agree that such almost derelict motorhomes parking on public streets are a blight and a danger. But I also grieve with anyone losing their pets and their home. It is does not matter that I object to the way they live or support them in the damage such choices make. To lose your animals and home in one horrific fire is heartbreaking and I don’t feel the need to add my bit to their current load of misery.
