Former Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office Employee Sentenced for Embezzlement
Press release from the Mendocino County District Attorney’s Office:
The former employee who embezzled $34,160 from the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office from August 2016 through October 2017 was sentenced to local prison this morning.
Melissa Alcala Alvarez (Perez), age 28, of Fort Bragg, North Carolina, was sentenced in the Mendocino County Superior Court to 76 months in local prison. The overall sentence was “split” between 18 months incarceration and 58 months on mandatory supervision, which is a Realignment form of parole. At the end of the hearing, the defendant was handcuffed and remanded into custody.
Local prison, also known locally as Realignment County Prison, was created in October 2011 when the Legislature passed the Realignment laws, laws which removed 500 felonies from state prison eligibility in an effort to reduce state prison crowding. However, by requiring defendants convicted of one or more of the 500 felonies to serve any prison sentence imposed in the county jails resulted in overcrowding in most, if not all of the county jails across the state.
By prearrangement, it is believed that the defendant will be serving her jail time in a jail facility outside of Mendocino County. With good time and work time credits pegged at 50%, the defendant will have to serve at least 9 months in jail before being released to mandatory supervision.
The prosecutor who argued for a prison sentence on behalf of the People this morning was District Attorney David Eyster. Sheriff Tom Allman also addressed the court. The investigating law enforcement agencies were the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office and the District Attorney’s own investigators. Today’s sentence was imposed by Mendocino County Superior Court Judge Ann Moorman.

Should of just broke into houses or steal cars. That way she wouldn’t have to go to jail.
Are you trying to argue that she shouldn’t be punished. She should serve all 18 months imho.
you are so correct–
Sharpies are for drawing on paper…
Lol 😂, she has that always surprised sharpie eyebrow look going on
You can’t say work on your little website, which is a funny term, but you let people bash people’s looks. It’s so silly and disheartening on both ends.
funny
Mocking those not in a “position of authority” is not allowed on this site.
You’re going to have to wait until a white lady with fake eyebrows commits a crime, to make a comment like that.
you are rapidly proving the opposite of your theory is correct, unless of course you are a closet cannabis consumer.
Or your bumbum
Third paragraph states exactly why our local jail has a revolving door, and the public is subjected to the same criminals committing the same crimes against us. The state just passed off their problem onto local jails/people, and made it our problem. BS………….
Just curious: does she also have to pay the money back?
This seems lenient to me. Someone driving 8 MPH over the posted limit can get pulled over for speeding alone. But, if asked if they were drinking–and, they are honest–can end up in MUCH more trouble. Not condoning drinking and driving. But, if they don’t hurt anyone (or thing), it’s a victimless crime.
We (as taxpayers), are ALL victims of Ms. Alvarez ( Perez).
Nemo she has been ordered to pay back the full amount stolen plus interest at the legal rate of 10%. This is per the Mendocino County District Attorney.
And we still are victims. The cost of incarceration will amount to more than how much she embezzled. Prisons/jails are more costly than medical care. Nearly $60,000 per year to incarcerate one prisoner. In 2040 California’s prison costs will be greater than half of our entire budget. At the rate we put offenders in prison that cost will most likely increase. And that money WILL be the taxpayer burden.
What is your point?
Are you saying we shouldn’t incarcerate a criminal so we can save a buck?
How do you think the justice system work?
No matter what people say and how much trash they talk( me included) any county or state agency in Cali is going to audit their books every now and then….. That’s the risk she took all be it a not so smart one…
She likes biting the hand of a bear in a cave.
Same question whether she’s paying any of it back, somehow? I wonder how much more she took while she was “being investigated” & perhaps will never be seen again?
So she’s from Fort Bragg, North Carolina?
she was born and raised in Fort Bragg, CA. She worked and lived in Ukiah for a few years and then married a serviceman and moved to Fort bragg, NC. It is confusing, but, yep.
Hmmm maybe I’m banned? Think I’ll just leave a unicorn emoji as my comment….from now on
