SoHum Chamber’s Featured Business of the Week: The Community Credit Union of Southern Humboldt

Southern Humboldt Chamber of Commerce

Every week the Southern Humboldt Chamber of Commerce features a business of the week. We’ll be sharing their posts here to celebrate our community.

This week’s featured business of the week is The Community Credit Union of Southern Humboldt!

The Community Credit Union was first founded in 1979 by a handful of visionary people who saw that our small, remote community needed basic banking services. From the beginning stages of a small office location in Redway, this reliable and efficient business has now evolved into a fully functional, professional financial institution that has been providing banking services to its community members for over 30 years!

Although the Community Credit Union is actually owned by its members, there are currently 3 team members that have 72 years of financial industry experience between them! As a financial cooperative, members of CCUSH are represented by a volunteer Board of Directors and members’ funds are federally insured by the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA), which is the credit union version of what most folds are familiar with as the FDIC, which insures the banks.

CCUSH is currently located at 757 Redwood Drive in Garberville, and has recently decided to expand their building space, to provide more services to their members. They offer a full array of transactional financial services products for their members’ convenience and value. This includes lending (home and property purchases and refinances, business equipment and lines of credit, autos, RV’s, credit cards, and personal loans), as well as business and personal checking, savings, Money Market accounts, and term CDs. They have free online banking and bill pay services, and debit cards. Coming up late this summer they will be introducing MOBILE banking and this fall, they will enhance their mobile banking with remote deposit capture services. CCUSH are current members of the Co-Op ATM network so members who travel far and wide can find ATMs with no surcharges in over 30,000 locations nationwide, and in 117 countries! CCUSH has an ATM locator on their website which can be accessed at home or on your phone or tablet! Not only does this banking business offer a variety of services to their members, but they also provide financial education and credit counseling services for their personal and business members!

CCUSH is the original, locally owned and locally managed financial institution for their members in at least a 45 miles radius of our community.

Patricia Neighbors, the President/CEO states, “We know our members, their families, and they know us. We know our area and our team has the expertise and financial industry knowledge to help our members make good financial decisions and get the best deal whenever possible”.

Something you may not know about this business is that even though their official name is Community Credit Union of Southern Humboldt, their area of service actually extends north to Ferndale and into Northern Mendocino County, to Laytonville. Because of their wide area of coverage, they are also well known as the “Community Credit Union”.

Patricia Neighbors, current President/CEO states, “Community Credit Union is proud to be a part of our community and serving our friends and neighbors is the reason we exist! We invite folks who may not be members to consider joining the credit union. We’d love the chance to provide more value to our friends and neighbors’ lives by providing needed financial services and borrowing and savings opportunities at competitive rates!”

We would like to extend a special thank you to this business not just for their years servicing our community, but also for their many hours of volunteer service they contribute in helping see our community thrive! The staff at CCUSH has spent many hours volunteering their time at anything from local events, to beautifying projects at our local schools, to helping sponsor our cleanups in town!

Thank you CCUSH for all that you do for our community, and we look forward to working with you May 19th, 2018 at our 2nd quarterly Team Up to Clean Up Campaign!

Got my first loan for my first new car, at CCU, 30+ years ago. That helped me build credit. They ‘held my hand’ as I learned about finances.
And I don’t stress too much if I have to pay a fee or whatever. I know my money is staying in the community and is helping support other clients, businesses, the CCU itself, and the community in general.
YOU want to take an ACTION to no longer be directly tied to or feeding the corrupt US banking system?
Then JOIN A/OUR CREDIT UNION!!!

Another great local business providing vital services to our community. My gratitude and appreciation to “the Neighbors” . Oh, and Patricia your sur name implies friendliness, warmth, kindness and community, which in my opinion suits you perfectly, very fitting.
An aside, I really love what your doing with the business of the week Kym. It came to me just now as i read this that our small community has been and will continue to expand with newcomers which can be both challenging and greatly rewarding (as is evidenced in this comment section everyday..lol).
Anyone can probably think back on their lives and identify a time or more likely several times ehen they were the newcomer to an existing social structure of friends and neighbors that may have been around long before they arrived. Speaking only from my own experience, having moved my family 6 times all over this country and even outside of it in the last 22 years, i found that at times it could be extremely intimidating for myself, my kids and my wife. There are some real cave trolls under some of the bridges in this country and i suspect even in this county, lol.. fortunately there are some really fine people as well. I think this BOtW series will be helpful in itroducing some newbies and even some oldtimers to the local communities businesses and the folks that own them by puting a name/face/history to each thus humanizingwhat otherwise just seem cold, soulless brick and mortar… great job kym, keep it up, i love having a little history on these businesses to, many aay or have changed hands since i last patronized them..👌

Oh hell no! They amortized my 20 year mortgage at a 30 year rate, and then refused to correct it. I had to involve the state before they finally made good. I knew more about math than either of the two managers I dealt with. Sad and scary, both.
