Intended Victim Reports Scam to Humboldt County Sheriff’s Department

Press release from the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office:

The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office has received a report of another phone scam targeting local residents, this time claiming to be from our office.

According to the victim who received the call, the scammer told the victim that he was from the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office and that she owed a fine because she had failed to appear for federal court jury duty. The scammer claimed that if she didn’t pay the fine, a warrant would be issued for her arrest. When the victim asked to speak with two known, current employees of the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office, the scammer said that they did not work there.

The victim immediately reported the interaction to our office and did not send money. When a deputy with the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office called the scammer’s number, the scammer then claimed that he was with the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office.

The federal court will always send a jury summons by U.S. mail and will never demand payment or sensitive information over the phone. The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office will never contact you for missing a federal court jury date. If you receive a call from someone demanding a fine and claiming to be from the Sheriff’s Office, hang up and call our main line at (707) 445-7251.

Please report all federal court phone scams to the United States District Court Northern District of California at (415) 522-2000 and to your local law enforcement.

Who answers phone calls anymore? If they’re gonna scam me they better learn how to text.

Actually scammers do text. I’ve received offers from Nigerian scammers via text for depositing large sums of money.

I got a call yesterday with a robot voice telling me that because my family and I ignored “an issue” and did not contact “them” in the past six months, the U.S. Government filed a lawsuit against me for fraud. They left same message twice. Called me three times on the hour. When my friend called the number back it only beeped. Beware of the many scammers who use fear and threats!
