Eureka Police Release Name of Victim; Give Details on Yesterday’s Shooting
On May 6, 2018, at about 4:52 p.m., officers with the Eureka Police Department (EPD) responded to a residence on the 3300 block of H Street in Eureka for the report of shots fired. Upon arrival, officers located a female with a gunshot wound and an uninjured female. The uninjured female told officers that the suspect, 52 year old Ronald Allen Crossland, fled the scene in her black Honda Accord. A Be on the Lookout (BOLO) was issued for Crossland and the vehicle.
Lifesaving efforts were initiated on the female with the gunshot wound and she was transported by ambulance to the hospital, where she was pronounced deceased. Next of kin has been notified and she has been identified as 60 year old Sharral Lynne McDonald of Fortuna.
At about 7:22 p.m., the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) located the black Honda Accord parked near the 2400 block of Fern Street in Cutten. The vehicle was unoccupied. Deputies and officers searched the area but were unable to locate Crossland.
Just before 9:00 p.m., the Fortuna Police Department (FOPD) was searching for Crossland near the 300 block of North Fortuna Boulevard based on previous contacts at the location. While on scene, FOPD heard a single gunshot. Crossland was located with what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Crossland was known to the uninjured female victim and McDonald; however, the exact motive of the shooting is unknown at this time. Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to call Detective Bise at (707) 441-4109.

She was such a sweet person OMG so heartbroken for her and her family
Just don’t know who you be dealing with people anymore.
He did the right thing in the end
Sherrie was an amazing woman always helping someone and this is what she was doing when she was murdered. The person she was helping hasn’t even had the decency to apologize or anything whatsoever to Sherrie’s family. It’s so heartbreaking. It’s hard to fathom that she’s gone
You have no idea what you are talking about or what that other person is going through… she hasn’t done anything wrong and is a victim as well so before you know all of the fact you should probably keep your negative comments to yourself self!
Sorry to hear about Sherrie passing. I think I might know her. Was Sherrie raised in Hydesville? And her last name started with an S.
She was known to many as Sherry Swain. Thoughts and prayers for her family. Shaun your in my thoughts~
Sadly, he got the shooting order wrong. Kill yourself FIRST, then others. Much more sensible.
I have been in situations helping other people where they begin to try and control your life based on their needs. Then when you decide to break off the connection they become violent towards you despite your kindness. I don’t know if this was the case here but so tragic. So preventable too if the shooter had been taken off the streets after his past behaviors. Anyone who hacks up a dog with a machete is a loose cannon. He didn’t belong free to be.
Geese…saw brief comment by a woman who said she’d been attacked by the shooter and her dog didn’t survive but nothing about a machete.
When someone is needing a lot of help then individuals can only act in a group to make a difference – just like if you have a cold your friend can nurse you but treating pneumonia or lung cancer is a group effort requiring a lot of education collected and tested over generations; really community here is so neglectful of mental health and the poor that it is a breeding ground for a lot of suffering.
