[UPDATE 6 p.m.] Searchers on the Thottapilly Crash Scene in Major Injury Accident
Press release from the California Highway Patrol:
UPDATE 6 p.m.: Thottapilly Car Pulled Up to RoadsideOn 04/15/2018, at approximately 1847 hours, Clayton Chaney, of Redding, CA was driving his 1999 Toyota Tacoma pickup southbound on US-101 south of Leggett, CA at an unknown rate of speed. For unknown reasons, Chaney allowed his Toyota to leave the west road edge of US-101 and travel onto the dirt/grass embankment.
Chaney attempted to correct the path of the Toyota, however, the Toyota began to slide in a counter clockwise manner. The passenger side of the Toyota impacted a guardrail and the Toyota rolled over onto it’s top.
Both Chaney and his passenger, Robert Talbott, of Corning, CA had to be extricated by fire personnel. Both were transported to Howard Memorial Hospital with major injuries.
Both Chaney and Talbott are members of the Shasta County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue team and were in the area on assignment.
Alcohol and/or drugs do not appear to be factor in this collision. The California Highway Patrol is investigating this collision.

My sympathies to these men who went from rescuers to rescued. May you both recover fast.
Wow theres some weird juju or something going on with the 101 & driving in general around humboldt/mendo!
Go slow and be alert, its too much, the chp must be working triple time. This many accidents must take its toll on all levels.
Hope they heal quickly, thanks for coming to help ♡
For real.
Make it stop. I hope the Toyota was well built enough and protected them . And i pray they survive and heal from their injuries. . What is going on? I honestly don’t know if I can hear about any more collisions .
I’m feeling pretty darn sad too.
I hope they were both wearing there seat belts a seat bealt can sometimes give you nine lives always were your seatbelt.
???? These are the rescuers -?
It is as if the Dementors have been released from Azkaban and sent to Humboldt to torment us unsuspecting Muggles before the arrival of Voldermort. Been here for almost 40 years and have never seen anything like the past few months in terms of tragedy piled on top of tragedy plied on top of tragedy. IMHO Something is going on . . . not sure if it is in the water or in the air . . . maybe in both? Whatever I do; walk, bike, drive — I do with a lot more watchfulness and care. When I drive somewhere and park, I walk around the car and check the tires each time I return. Look left, right, left, right, left, right before going through a 4-way (or any intersection) or crossing a street. There just seems to be some kind of collective insanity/stupidity/outright craziness going on all around and within Humboldt/Mendo and I will slow down, keep my distance, and take whatever precautions come to mind to hopefully steer clear of the unexpected potential calamity looming around each and every corner. If we all practice more caution and patience, slow our collective pace down a bit, take an extra deep breath now and then, and put the freaking phone down we can overcome this current relentless restlessness with peace and calm.
Seriously!! This is just too much in such a small area. Some wicked negativity has surfaced. Powerful protection to all who enter the zone. Be aware, when you’re prepared, you’re protected!
Omg that’s so sad! They were probably exhausted from their search efforts. Thoughts and prayers to them and their loved ones. Breaks my heart to think that they are out there trying to bring this poor family to rest and this happens to them.
Kym
Thanks for the posts & keeping up with all the events related to this tragedy.
Oh my goodness, so sad. I hope they will be okay and will recover quickly. Thank you to them and all the search and rescue teams.
Good God….did someone make a voodoo doll type model of the region?
Seems like an awful lot of tragedy lately, even for an area that see more than its share.
I wish these men swift and full recovery from their injuries, physical and emotional.

Soon, texting will be part of the instant investigation. I see so many grey-haired drivers texting, not just teens

Reports are that they are going to heal from this.
