The deceased male driver of a vehicle that was located off the Avenue of the Giants around 10:30 a.m. was extricated and brought up the embankment by Miranda Fire and by Southern Humboldt County Technical Rescue, said Thomas Norris, Public Information Officer for Southern Humboldt County Technical Rescue this afternoon.

Norris said, “Upon arrival [at the accident], the Miranda Incident Commander found that the occupant was deceased.” Norris said the deceased man was the only occupant. “He was driving northbound just north of Myers Flat,” Norris explained. “He went off across the southbound lanes and hit a tree. He probably went 30 feet down.”

Norris said, “Miranda Fire used the Jaws of Life to extricate him and then Southern Humboldt Tech Rescue used a rope and pulley system to bring his body to the roadway.”

UPDATE 5:51 p.m.: Press release from the California Highway Patrol:

On April 2, 2018, at approximately 10:20 AM, a 2002 Toyota 4Runner, driven by a single male occupant, was traveling northbound on SR-254, north of Myers Flat. For reasons still under investigation, the Toyota crossed over the double yellow center line and oncoming traffic lane, and traveled off the west roadway edge. The Toyota traveled approximately 35 feet down a descending embankment and collided with multiple trees. As a result of the collision, the driver sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The driver’s name is currently being withheld pending notification of next of kin. It is unknown at this time if drugs or alcohol were a factor in this collision. This collision remains under investigation by the California Highway Patrol – Garberville office.

The Garberville CHP would like to thank Cal-Fire, Southern Humboldt Technical Rescue, California State Parks and CalTrans for their assistance on the scene and during the investigation.
