[UPDATE 4/2] Trespass Grow on USFS Land Believed Source of Hazardous Spill in Kingsbury Creek Near Hayfork

Late yesterday, Trinity County Environmental Health issued a warning that a hazardous substance had been spilled on Kingsbury Creek a tributary of Hayfork Creek which is a tributary of the south fork of the Trinity River.

“The debris was indicative of a trespass grow dumped on USFS land,” stated an email by Kristy Anderson, Director of Trinity County Environmental Health. “I went and tested the material, and we cannot rule out Carbofuran.”

According to a Cornell University Pesticide website, “Carbofuran is highly toxic by inhalation and ingestion and moderately toxic by dermal absorption (630). Risks from exposure to carbofuran are especially high for persons with asthma, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, mechanical obstruction of the gastrointestinal or urogenital tracts, or those in vagotonic states.”

The initial report asserted that the spill came from “a hit and run vehicle accident causing the release. No [vehicles] were found on scene when the USFS arrived.”

Residents who drink water from Kingsbury Creek are recommended to treat water before drinking. Below is the entire press release from Trinity County:

Trinity County Environmental Health is warning the public that there has been a spill in Kingsbury Creek of unknown substances, the substance is suspected to be an organophosphate, a harmful pesticide. We will continue to notify the public until the spill has been remediated. If you divert or have a shallow well in Kingsbury Creek, be cautious and use filtration listed below.

How to treat water before drinking? Many of the pesticides of concern can be treated with a Granular Activated Carbon filter and non-ionic polymeric resin filters. Individuals can Google NSF 42, 53, and 401 point-of-use or point-of-entry filters, or they can call our office at 623-1459 for more information.

Map of the area: The red marker indicates the GPS coordinates of the spill.

UPDATE 4/2: According to Kristy ANderson, Director of Environmental Health for Trinity County, “The spill at Kingsbury Creek has been cleaned up by the USFS’s environmental cleanup contractors.”

“Can’t rule out carbofuran” Well what did they actually find? How much? any packaging? Was it just potting soil, and since weed is bad, every grow uses pesticides? can we rule out plutonium? Was the source a grow site, a cross roads? How does it compare to the TRAINLOAD of metamsodium destined for “legit” farms that fell into the Sacramento River? Many people grow much weed without the use off chemical pesticides. Will there be a press release from the USFS if it turn out to be something other than carbofuran?

Trespass grows are on the entire other end of the spectrum compared to those growing medicine. Not all grows are the same and definitely are done for different intentions. Just like all people are not the same, lumping everyone into a box is just crazy.

Every single person I know that grow hate the big trespass grows even more because people like yourself want to think they’re all the same. If you live in humboldt id say maybe not the place for you as this rhetoric is tired and not helpful.
Infighting is redundant and helps no one. Its amaxing to me that people still want to blame all growers instead of asking why authorities continue to neglect busting these grows that we all cant stand.
Unfortunately a lot of it is because its very hard work and theres no house, cars, land or cash they can seize from these illegal grows. Look it up, its a big money maker. Cartels run these kind of trespass grows where they pay off law enforcement or threaten them into submission.

And just fyi all herb is tested before sold to the public in the legal market and guess what most humboldt growers pass, tho there is a learning curve as many organic products cant be used under current guidelines, but not due to awful chemicals; its things like sm90 (that’s basically coriander oil) that is now not allowed.
Lets utilize our common ground and say we want the focus on horrible grows like these instead of blaming one another.

From what I’ve heard the cartels are moving on to poppy fields instead of pot, especially since the development of a yeast that allows you to make heroin directly from the poppy flower right at home, or in the forest as the cartels do with cocaine in Colombia.

Please go check out Sanjay Gupta (the M.D. who towed the DEA line as an advisor to national news about the dangers of pot, only to research it himself and completely chang his view) videos he made that are simply called “weed” & try telling those families that cannabis isn’t medicine. Many families with children who were having awful amounts of seizures ended up becoming “medical refugees” in that they had to move to a state allowing medical cannabis to get help for their kids. The results and help for these kids is off the charts amazing!

We have thc/cbd receptors all over our brains. That means humans have had a loooong relationship with using cannabis.
If youre worried about chemicals then see what’s being sprayed all over your food from the central valley where chemicals have been detected 800′ down and over 100,000 people currently have no access to clean drinking water. That’s san Joaquin valley if you want to look it up.

Weed definitely has medical properties, but so does heroin and cocaine. And just like heroin and cocaine smoking too much weed is not good for you either.

“Plutonium has a half-life of about 24,000 years. And scientists have known for decades that even in small doses, it is highly toxic, leading to radiation illness, cancer and often to death.”
See. If law abiding citizens are not allowed plutonium, only criminals will will use it.

Trouble is that they are usually discovered because someone got ill. And by that time there is no one left to be “got.” In one incident , never reported in the press that I knew, the alert was the death of a chicken flock whose water came from a creek.

If money making is the goal and legality not an issue with growers or buyers, this will happen. And keep your others are worse stories to yourself. This is bad enough.

tweakers don’t cleanup their trespass grow and dump it somewhere else. this is just a tweaker dumping their shit offsite. they wrap it up in the bed using a tarp, tie it off to a tree and drive off. or they fill a barely movable caravan to max, drag it somewhere close by and leave it for public works or CHP to deal with.

every three months or so I pick up about 3 miles of roadside trash, you would be amazed at what you learn about your surroundings doing that.

Well it’s debris from a “Trespass Grow” that was dumped on USFS land so how do you suggest they figure out who to bust?

They tested a water bottle for dna to bust an abalone poacher that wasn’t caught with the loot. A pile of trash has evidence somewhere.

if growers were making medicine how come 99 percent of them were growing thc heavy weed and not cbd ? truth is almost all growers have no interest in helping anyone but themselves. been here many years and witnessed the vile greed.

How about education on better grow methods. Only a bad grower needs all that crap. Personally I ferment teas way cheaper

Actually, the town is named for the fork in the river where hay was growing. And it is such a beautiful place that I live here! Just like other towns in the emerald triangle – unfortunately we have these problems. That being said, there have been responsible and organic growers here for generations. Peace, love and happiness to all!

The county needs to put liens on growers property like Butte County is doing! Shuts them down quik style! Huge amounts for outlaw growers! Yes!

Carbofuran is one of the most toxic carbamate pesticides. It is marketed under the trade names Furadan, by FMC Corporation and Curater, among several others. It is used to control insects in a wide variety of field crops, including potatoes, corn and soybeans. It is a systemic insecticide, which means that the plant absorbs it through the roots, and from here the plant distributes it throughout its organs where insecticidal concentrations are attained. Carbofuran also has contact activity against pests.

Carbofuran usage has increased in recent years because it is one of the few insecticides effective on soybean aphids, which have expanded their range since 2002 to include most soybean-growing regions of the U.S. The main global producer is the FMC Corporation.

Carbofuran exhibits toxicity mediated by the same mechanism as that of the notorious V-series nerve agents and presents a risk to human health. It is classified as an extremely hazardous substance in the United States as defined in Section 302 of the U.S. Emergency Planning and Community Right-to-Know Act (42 U.S.C. 11002), and is subject to strict reporting requirements by facilities which produce, store, or use it in significant quantities.[6]

Carbofuran is known to be particularly toxic to birds. In its granular form, a single grain will kill a bird. Birds often eat numerous grains of the pesticide, mistaking them for seeds, and then die shortly thereafter. Before the granular form was banned by U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in 1991,[14] it was blamed for millions of bird deaths per year.

Carbofuran has one of the highest acute toxicities to humans of any insecticide widely used on field crops (only aldicarb and parathion are more toxic). ” – wikepedia

—- WTF? ohh the super mites must be back. after the avid and floramite stop working then this is the ticket! i found some on ebay! coming to a watershed near you real soon!

— does anyone else find it suspect that they associated the waste with a trespass grow, and suggested they cant rule out the third most toxic pesticide in the world? capable of killing an eagle with just one grain? and nerve damage to humans in similar levels of exposure? should be easy to figure out who then.
go figure trespass growers arent wearing the latest in protective gear to fumigate or spread their toxins, so exposure would be certain as we know all extra trespass funds get spent on tortillas, rice, salsa, meth, and cheap beer.
any new patients with a new form of “paulsiemers” coming into hayfork clinic or weaverville? just sayn…

it also requires a GC to perform the analysis of EPA 8141a to rule it in or out. this is just another bullshit propaganda piece presented to us by idiots due to the fact that Trinity County Env. health does not have a GC nor would they be able to even perform the analysis if they did. you can buy all the carbamates you want at most stores, its not like its imported from Mexico, that would be the DDT. The US still manufactures DDT, we sell it to Mexico and other 3rd world countries and then imported it back attached to tomatoes and other fruits and veggies.

It seems like we may see more trespass grows if county code enforcement cracks down on unpermitted ones on private land. People still want to grow. If it becomes riskier to do it on their own property some are likely to set up on someone else’s. This may lead to more trespass grows of all sizes on both public and private land.
