Department of Justice Indicts Humboldt County Man For Four Bank Robberies and a Gas Station Robbery
This is a press release from the Department of Justice. The information has not been proven in a court of law and any individuals described should be presumed innocent until proven guilty:
A federal grand jury indicted Harwood Francis McCovey for his alleged role in four bank robberies and the armed robbery of a Shell Gas Station in Humboldt County, announced Acting United States Attorney Alex. G. Tse and Federal Bureau of Investigation Special Agent in Charge John F. Bennett.
According to the indictment, in the summer of 2016, McCovey, 33, of Hoopa, Calif., committed four bank robberies and a robbery of a Shell Gas Station. McCovey is alleged to have used a dangerous weapon in the commission of each robbery. The alleged robberies occurred on the following dates and locations:
- July 20, 2016 – Bank in Eureka, CA
- July 27, 2016 – Credit union in Eureka, CA
- July 31, 2016 – Shell Gas Station in McKinleyville, CA
- August 4, 2016 – Credit union in Eureka, CA
- August 12, 2016 – Bank in Fortuna, CA
In sum, McCovey was charged with four counts of armed bank robbery, in violation of 18 U.S.C. § 2113(a) and (d), and one count of robbery affecting interstate commerce (Hobbs Act robbery), in violation of 18 U.S.C. § 1951(a).
An indictment merely alleges that crimes have been committed, and the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. If convicted, the defendant faces a maximum statutory penalty of 25 years in prison for each bank robbery and 20 years in prison for the Hobbs Act robbery charge. Additional fines, forfeitures, restitution, and special assessments also may be imposed. However, any sentence after conviction would be imposed by the court only after consideration of the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and the federal statute governing the imposition of a sentence, 18 U.S.C. § 3553.
The defendant currently is in state custody and will be transferred to federal custody to appear on these charges. A hearing for defendant’s arraignment has not yet been scheduled.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Randy Leonard is prosecuting the case with the assistance of Marina Ponomarchuk. The prosecution is the result of investigations by the Eureka Police Department, the Fortuna Police Department, and the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office with support from the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Eureka Resident Agency.

A. ‘cos I ran out of gas on my way to the bank!
I was posting the other day what an awful family the McCoveys are .of course someone jumped to their defense, and hey now look at that another mccovey up to no good. please please tell me that they are a nice honest hard working family.
We’re not all bad people you just assume on what you see and hear drugs got the best of him I work full time I have a clean record I have family members who are sheriff and correctional officers as well every body has bad apples in the family
You obviously don’t know many, then. I say this with the utmost respect to the family, but there are about 1000 McCoveys in this county. Saying the whole family is bad because you see the name crop up occasionally is pretty ignorant. Every McCovey I’ve ever met is just as decent and hard working and human as the people I know by other last names. Don’t blame them because they happen to share some random great grandfather with this guy.
Is your family perfect? Every family has at least one or two. Don’t judge, karma comes back
There are a lot of nice, honest McCoveys. I know them. They work at the Clinic in Hoopa, down at this clinic, and at Social Services. Normally I keep my opinions off this page, but I think your comment is rude. I had an amazing friend, Lincoln. He coached all sorts of sports and knew half the young people in Humboldt, and helped most of them, a McCovey or not. I have other McCovey friends as well. So to say a whole family, because of their name is bad… well, that’s bad. I see you only signed in by K. If you really don’t like the whole McCovey family, then stand up and say it.

So glad he will be tried federally instead of the Humboldt courts. No probation for you!
Regardless of the McCovey family members who choose to do very wrong things, the vast majority of their elders, adults and children are very kind, respectful, generous and respectful folks. May healing continue to happen for their family.
Must not have been making away with much money in order to need to commit so many robberies in such a short period of time.
The mcCoveys are my peeps. There are vastly more beautiful individuals in the family/tribe than there are individuals struggling to assimilate. I’m not excusing criminal behavior, just saying that hating on others and not looking where the other three fingers are pointing is unproductive, and in my opinion, breeding grounds for more of the very same behavior that makes us uncomfortable, or brings harm us and ours.
