K-9 Released From Car Via Remote Control Used to Subdue Suspect Fighting Two Deputies

This is a press release from the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office. The information has not been proven in a court of law and any individuals described should be presumed innocent until proven guilty:

mcso Mendocino County Sheriff's Office MCSO

On 03-23-2018 at about 3:00 AM, Mendocino County Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched to a reported disturbance at a residence in the 24000 block of Birch Terrace in Willits, California.

Deputies were advised there was an unknown person at the door of the reporting person’s residence ringing the door bell and yelling profanities.

A Deputy arrived and contacted Michael Eugene Herman on the front porch of the residence and he was screaming very loud.

The Deputy exited his patrol vehicle and Herman fled on foot around the side of the house. The Deputy gave chase and made contact with Herman, who was intoxicated.

A second Deputy arrived and located both Herman and the first Deputy wrestling on the ground after Herman became physically aggressive towards the first Deputy.

Herman physically resisted the Deputies and refused to comply with verbal commands to stop resisting. Herman refused to place his hands behind his back after being told he was under arrest.

Herman continued to overpower the Deputies and appeared to be under the influence of more than just an alcoholic beverage. During the struggle Herman punched one of the Deputies a couple times in the face, and grabbed the Deputy by the neck.

Finally, one of the Deputies wrestling with Herman was able to release his K9 partner ‘Ruddick” from his patrol vehicle via remote control to assist in subduing Herman.

With the assistance of K9 Ruddick, Herman was subsequently restrained and arrested for 243(b) PC and 69 PC.

Herman was transported to Howard Memorial Hospital where he was medically evaluated and was subsequently booked into the Mendocino County Jail where he was to be held in lieu of $15,000.00 bail.

One of the Deputies sustained minor injuries during this incident and was treated/released from Howard Memorial Hospital.

Wow. This story is a breath of fresh air… I applaud the deputy for resisting the urge to shoot this man and instead used his K-9 to subdue the idiot. This could have ended very differently and the perp is super lucky that the officer used his brain instead of his gun.

Another excellent job done by police. These are the stories that happen every single day and are almost never heard of outside of the department. Excellent restraint, excellent job, exactly what you were trained to do! Great work, thank you for putting your life on the line to protect the rest of us (including the crazies).

Wow so you can hit cops amd resist arrest and only get a 15k bail? Shoukd of atleast put it at 100k! That means he only has to pay 1500$ to bail out and be a harm to our community again! Our justice system makes no sense!

I agree and would love to see thousands of people marching in protest to lock up the violent criminals instead of the inanimate objects that violent criminals sometimes use.
The court system’s revolving door has worn out it’s welcome.

Yeah, I’m sure that came as a huge relief to him too, otherwise he may have had to put off buying that condo in Hawaii or the new Porsche coming out this summer. That would’ve sucked!

A person gets attacked for ringing a doorbell and being profane? I was screaming all day yesterday. I’m really glad nobody tackled me.

Did you even bother to read the article? He resisted and assaulted the officers. He wasn’t attacked he was apprehended. At least according to the press release. If you have some other information to what occurred maybe you should contact law enforcement.

It shouldn’t matter what color your skin is. If you are dumb enough to assault a police officer, or any person for that matter, you are lucky all you got was a few dog bites. I couldn’t give two shits if a person wants to stay at home and consume all the dugs and alcohol the want, but the moment you start harassing innocent people and being a menace to society you have to face the consequences that you brought on yourself.

First I’ve heard of a ‘remote control’ device that will open the car door and let Fido do what he was trained to do! Perfect conditions for that option.
Always good to know what tricks the police have up their sleeve (or on their belt).

Good dog!
Let’s hope nobody stole the radio while the car door was left open.
