[UPDATE 4:41 p.m.] Snow in the Mountains Is Impacting Some Roads
now has fallen in the upper hills of Southern Humboldt. Surprisingly (with help from Caltrans snowplows), most major mountain passes are still clear.
Chains are required on Hwy 36 east of Mad River (See Caltrans Quickmap for more information) and snow plows are working the road.
A snowplow is working Hwy 199 near the Oregon border.
I-5 headed north from Redding is quite snowy.
UPDATE 8:27 a.m.: Caltrans reports that chains are now needed on 299 in Trinity County as well. They tweeted, “Chain controls are in effect in @CaltransD2 on 36 and 299. Be prepared if you travel east and give yourself lots of time to travel.”
UPDATE 3:51 p.m.: Humboldt County Public Works warns, “Bald Hills Rd 6-8 inches new snow. Rd open, carry chains and watch for Ice.”
UPDATE 4:41 p.m.: Hwy 299 no longer has chains required.
However, Caltrans warns that both 3 and 36 have chains required. (See Caltrans Quickmap for more information)

When I see and hear of snow I think ‘good, we have water, now and later.’
Water is a good thing, and I’m glad we all have it in abundance.
I-5 headed north from reading??? north from Redding?
My apologies. Yes. I’ve fixed it now.
