This is a press release from the California Highway Patrol. The information has not been proven in a court of law and any individuals described should be presumed innocent until proven guilty:chp tc report

On Wednesday, February 28, 2018, at approximately 1150 hours, a 1991 Mazda pickup was traveling northbound on Myrtle Ave., north of Pigeon Pt. Dr. The driver of the Mazda pickup allowed it travel off the east roadway edge. The truck then traveled back across both lanes of traffic, collided with a guardrail along the west edge of the roadway, and continued into the southbound lane of Myrtle Ave. directly in the path of an oncoming vehicle. The Mazda pickup and a 2005 Peterbilt tractor/trailer combination collided head-o n and came to rest blocking both lanes of traffic. Traffic along Myrtle Ave. was temporarily diverted to allow cleanup of debris and fluids within the lanes of traffic and reopened at approximately 1430 hours.

The driver of the Mazda pickup , a 24 year old male out of Eureka, was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the collision. He was transported to St. Joseph’s Hospital where he was later pronounced deceased. Identification of the driver of the Mazda is pending notification of next of kin by the Humboldt County Coroner’s Office. A dog in the pickup appeared uninjured but was transported to a local veterinarian for an exam.

The driver of the Peterbilt tractor/trailer, Tyson Boynton of Ferndale, CA, was wearing his seat belt at the time of the collision and was uninjured. ·

Alcohol or drugs as factors in this collision remains under investigation.

This collision is being in estigated by the California Highway Patrol and anyone with information related to this collision  is encouraged to call the Humboldt Area CHP office at 707-822-5981.

UPDATE 3:57 p.m.: The CHP has issued a correction. “[T]he driver of the Peterbilt (Tyson Boynton) is only 28 years old.”

So sad for all involved!!
Its easy to drift, how awful for the big rig driver too.
That straightaway gets people speeding and unfortunately have seen lots of folks almost go off the road while texting, its not as wide as it seems.

RIP and condolences to the family and friends. I hope someone in the family can take his dog, its incredibly emotional for the dog too. If you hear that it needs a home will you please let us know kym.
Best and blessings to all ♡

Condolences to the family and hope Tyson can get through this difficult time!

This may not be the time nor place but let’s have this as a reminder: PLEASE people (!) slow the F down! People are driving like maniacs on that stretch of road, passing where they shouldn’t be, traveling too fast/too close, texting/ on their phones. They are hitting bicyclist, killing deer/wildlife and coming very close (repeatedly) to hitting pedestrians/ joggers/walkers! There is cross traffic, school buses, big trucks entering/exiting Myrtle Ave/Old Arcata Rd. I see this insanity EVERY DAY! A week ago a friggitin idiot in a pot dozer rear ended my car in this same small section and totaled my one and only car! All because he was in a hurry and on his phone. We paid the price but he could care less and walked away w/o a scratch to his rig and person. People’s lives are at stake! There is no doing over once the damage/ death is done! Please be safe and respect all life out there on the road!

Come on, people. 1991 Mazda, 24 year old driver, NO SEATBELT, driving off side of the road in the middle of the day, then over-correcting across the roadway. If this driver was not on pills/opiates you can name my first born.

OK, I choose Shitforbrains, maybe he was distracted reaching for the radio or a cell phone.

You are mistaken. That is a terribly hurtful thing to say, and it is incorrect. Let us know when your baby is born.

You should delete your post.

Or the deceased could of fell asleep. Please keep his family in your thoughts for compassion and may they be surrounded by kind supportive folks. The rush to judgement of typical key boards jockeys. May the big rig driver also have healing and supportive folks. Being in an accident resulting in a death can be very traumatic.

“Being in an accident resulting in a death can be very traumatic.”

Not only for the victim but also for those who loved the victim.
I agree.

I stated earlier the 24 year old and his family are members of my church. I wont publish is name because of the family’s privacy. He has a young wife and baby son. So keep his family and our church family in prayer. We are all in shock. Thank you.

It remains incomprehensible to keep seeing ‘not wearing seatbelt’ so often. I really dont understand people.

he may have removed his seatbelt to reach for something he dropped and that is why he lost control…I can’t tolerate these armchair judges that need to keep their ignorant opinions to themselves!! HAVE A HEART. The loved ones read these responses.

Vickie, if he did that he’s a fucking terrible idiot of a driver, with predictable consequences. Frankly the responses here are baffling – this is not an “accident” so much as it is a “cautionary tale.”

Wear a seatbelt and pay attention when you’re driving. Those two things prevent this death 100% of the time. It was the middle of the day, wake up people. Be responsible for each other and demand a higher standard, otherwise your entire town will slowly circle the drain to mediocrity. Yes it’s sad when people die making stupid mistakes. This is why we point out when people make stupid, preventable mistakes like dying in a 40mph car wreck on a slow road because they weren’t wearing a seatbelt or paying proper attention.
