**Jan. 26 original announcement**

In 2014, the voters of Humboldt County passed Measure Z to make their communities safer. Over the last three years, this community has funded more than 70 projects with approximately $33.5 million to help achieve that goal. Now, as Measure Z enters its fourth year, the citizen group that looks after these funds is looking for more ways to make Humboldt a better, safer place to live.

If you have a project that provides a public safety or essential service to our community, consider applying for Measure Z funds. The Citizens’ Advisory Committee on Measure Z Expenditures is now accepting applications for funding, and you have until Feb. 23 to apply.

Measure Z is a half-cent sales tax applied to most local purchases and was passed by voters in November 2014. Since then, the committee has received more than 130 applications for funding. Some of the projects that have been funded by the Board of Supervisors include:

  • Hiring nearly 40 Sheriff’s Office personnel
  • Maintaining ambulance service on Highway 299
  • Innovative project with Eureka Police and the Department of Health & Human Services regarding homeless services
  • Student resource and juvenile probation diversion positions in our local schools
  • Purchasing nearly $6 million of equipment for volunteer fire departments
  • Providing more than $6 million for road improvement and safety projects, and more.

Learn more about the projects that have been funded by Measure Z.

The advisory committee will review applications and recommend projects for funding. This process will be repeated each year until 2020 when Measure Z sunsets.

The applications ask you to describe your proposal, as well as your plan to sustain the proposal after 2020. In addition, the application requires an explanation as to how the request is an essential service or for public safety.

If you cannot download the application you can pick up a copy at the County Administrative Office at 825 5th Street, Room 112 in Eureka.
