Great! The SAMF is one of the JOYS of the summer!!!
Sounds like there are good decisions about making changes. Like more non-profit participation would be great!
While I want the MCC to make money to demonstrate it’s financial viability, the high entry price is a little disconcerting. I remember when it was $3. (Of course there was A LOT less ‘exotic’ entertainment too). I can afford the higher price but some can’t.
Hope there can be ways to help the less $ fortunate to come celebrate a So Hum summer! Like……. Volunteer and get in that way! I did that last year and had SO much fun being part of the event!!
Let’s CARE about one another!
Let’s HEAL the wounds!
Let’s be CREATIVE to pay the debt!
Let’s SUPPORT those less fortunate!

I don’t understand what non profit food vs. for profit food vendors means.

You purchase your iced coffee from KMUD, a non-profit, but capitalist caffeine-pusher Juan Valdez is iced-out. Such is the ideal for all other food vendors.

That’s kinda what I thought, but not being well versed in Neo Hippie language, I wasn’t sure. They should have the Hare Krishna Temple there to give away free food for people that are price squeezed on the ticket price. It might help people out.

I have never attended the festival for this reason: The ticket price is ridiculous! AND, there is no parking.

I attend the whole earth festival in Davis, every year. Admission is FREE, and parking is plentiful. Great music, food, arts and crafts, and none of that “SoHum Vibe”.

The Whole Earth Festival in Davis, May 11-13, in Davis, sponsored by the UCD experimental college since 1969.

Good luck Mateel, and don’t forget: Don’t pay in cash for your tickets! This “non-profit” organization does not appear to be honestly operated or able to handle the application of cash to it’s bills…

Not every festival is for every person but I love the “SoHum Vibe”, the musicians, the craftmanship in the items sold, the adorable little kids in face paint, the belly dancers, the stilt walkers, the hot wax booth, the people I know, and the great food.

Thanks for bringing up memories. I used to attend the Whole Earth Festival a bunch during the previous millennium. That’s where ‘Earth Day’ started, btw. I personally prefer the Benbow environment over the UC Davis campus, but definitely agree the price is right at the latter fest. And I never met Wavy Gravy or Jose Arguelles in Humboldt.

Fine. Have a nice, long, higher carbon footprint drive to Davis!
Oh. While you tout it as “free”, keep in mind that the Davis fest is subsidized by OUR tax dollars. The MCC does not have that luxury.

Thanks for the SoHum vibe bro! At the WEF, the vendors pay a fee, and the Experimental College Volunteers provide the rest. Taxpayers pay nothing, and my car gets over 30 mpg. WEF is a great place to meet my kids, too!

I love SoHum, but can’t stand the dopers, the drug thing, or the peculiar brand of locals… And I would never pay to attend a “Craft Fair”, or trust the MCC with cash proceeds.

I’m glad to see this tradition continue.
I wish we could afford to go.
Back in the day, admission to the Summer Arts Fair was $3-$5. If you wanted to see the big name music acts on Saturday night, it was a separate ticket.
We would love to come to shop with the craft vendors, buy some food, maybe catch one or two local acts, like Feet First, and then go home. For this I would be willing to pay $10-$15 apiece, but for a family with two teens and two adults, it’s $100 to get in for one day. That doesn’t leave much to spend with the vendors.
The North Country fair, in Arcata, has many of the same food and crafts vendors, with music on stage, and it’s free to get into, just like the Davis fair, and many other fairs that feature food and crafts.
I don’t expect the Mateel to be able to make it free, but a reasonable admission price would make it
more possible for families to attend and spend money with the vendors. Paying $25 apiece to get to shop is just too much. If I wanted to see bigger name music acts, I would pay to go to a concert.
I know the Mateel is in trouble financially, and I hope they can get through these tough times, but it sure
would be nice to be able to attend the local fair without it costing so much.
