Scam Alert From the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Department
Press release from the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Department:
Today the Sheriff’s Office has received several calls from citizens reporting a person claiming to be Lieutenant McDonald with the Sheriff’s Office. The telephone number associated with the most recent scam is 707-210-5889. The caller claims the scam victims have a warrant out for their arrest. The victims are then directed to obtain a Green Dot card from Safeway or Walgreens, and pay the warrant fine over the telephone. Additional victims have been told to meet the Lieutenant outside the Sheriff’s Office to pay the fine.
The Sheriff’s Office will never ask you to pay a fine over the phone or through a money card. Nor will the Sheriff’s Office ask you to meet an officer outside the courthouse.
I called the number listed and for some reason “Lieutenant McDonald” didn’t want to talk with me once I identified myself.
The public is urged to call 445-7251 if they believe they are the victim of a scam.

Really?!?!?! People are getting seriously ballsy!
It’s intentional. Scams are made slmewhat obvious to deter smart people, so the scammers can focus on more gullible people like the elderly.
“Additional victims have been told to meet the Lieutenant outside the Sheriff’s Office to pay the fine.”
Ri-i-i-ght.
Sadly folks who are not with it mentally due to age, language barriers or foggy thinking from RX medications are at high risk for such scams. I know an elderly gentleman who was scammed by an IRS wannabe. He believed the scammer because the caller had “spoofed” the local law enforcement number of his county. At the age of 79 and suffering from dentin and PTSD, he drove to the woods and killed himself due to the threats made. He is one of hundreds of frail elders preyed upon each year. I hate the scammers with a deep passion that they get a just reward of punishment.
That’s horrible. It’s a shame people are that desperate and at such a low place in life that they are willing to take advantage of their own kind. I don’t care how hungry you are I rather die of starvation then try to rip someone off or run a scam. Karma.
