Buck and Full Moon

Buck and full moon.

Buck and full moon. [Photo by Kym Kemp]

We’ve noticed that deer in different areas of the Emerald counties look different from each other. We thought we’d do an informal survey. This photo was taken in Southern Humboldt west of Miranda a few days ago. Can you upload photos of deer you’ve seen from Del Norte through Mendocino County from the Pacific through Trinity County? Tell us where and when you captured the image.

Then let us know if you see any differences.

I too like seeing them live in the field out of season. But in season I like seeing them with my tag attached to an antler in the bed of my truck.

That is a sweet looking buck. Look at the size of his eyegurds. Love the tall dual eye guard racks that Trinity produces.

Awesome pics!!!
I noticed the deer in the areas just west of redway like seely creek/elk ridge have less white on their face. Tho of course it could jyst be different family genetics in different areas.
A friend said she watched a deer surf the waves over and over near the cove, anyone else ever seen that??

Wow, I’ll say! A little off for deer season, but the deer porn is terrific. What splendid animals! So beautiful and so delicious. The original fast food. Those were the days (‘70’s & ‘80,s) with the hills crawling with pork and venison. I thought they would never end.

Aldo Leopold wrote a great passage about seeing your first golf ball vs. your first deer. I’m lovin’ it, Kymster. Thanks for the memories, all of you.

Just wonderful. There is an intergrade between Columbian blacktail and mule deer that is recognized by DFW and Boone & Crockett and Pope & Young and is reflected in their maps. The line runs Perhaps through trinity and Siskiyou counties. They are strains of the same deer; the mulies are bigger. Funny, California may be the only lower-48 State with no whitetails.

They are called Bench legs, the cross between mule deer and blacktails, don’t know where the term came from.

Too funny and clever too. Best thread in a long time Deer are beautiful. Don’t eat them or hunt them myself. They come to my house and eat the rose bush leaves in front of my house. Love to watch them nibble only two feet away.

An Oregon coastal blacktail is very distinct from a California coastal deer. Likewise, an inland deer is has a different appearance and biological cycle from that of the coasties
