St. Bernard’s High School receive Golden Can award

St. Bernard’s High School in Eureka won the Golden Can award for donating the most food (just shy of a ton!) in the Humboldt Holiday Food Drive! Six high schools participated. All proceeds benefitted the great work of @FoodforPeople.[Photo and caption tweeted by Senator Mike McGuire]

Friday afternoon, St. Bernard’s High School students received the Golden Can award for gathering nearly a ton of non-perishable food for the Humboldt Holiday Food Drive. According to a press release by Senator Mike McGuire,

In December, hundreds of Humboldt County high school students, residents, business and community leaders showed up in force for Senator McGuire’s second annual Humboldt Holiday Food Drive.

Students from six local high schools – Arcata, Eureka, McKinleyville, Fortuna, Ferndale and St. Bernard’s – spent weeks collecting canned and non-perishable food at their schools and then each made a big delivery, dropping off truckloads of food to the Holiday Food Drive. This friendly competition between the schools was focused on giving back to our neighbors in need and the school who donated the most food would win the coveted “Golden Can Award” and its next school dance would be on the house (up to $750 in value).

The victory was clear when students from St. Bernard’s High School drove up with a trailer full of food, filling giant bins with over a ton of food, far exceeding the donations from any other school. [Yesterday,]

at 3:45 pm Senator Mike McGuire [delivered] the Golden Can Award to the students, along with the check for the school dance.

“We are so grateful for the incredible generosity of Humboldt’s high school students, and hundreds of our neighbors who helped us blow through our original goal,” Senator Mike McGuire said. “We were overwhelmed by the amazing response during the Food Drive and we feel privileged to have partnered with Food For People, who does such important work in every corner of this great County.”

In addition, dozens of generous neighbors also stopped by the Food Drive to drop off canned food and over $4,600 in cash and checks were donated to Food for People as well….

Good work kids, this is the stuff of community development. Strengthening the students, making them aware there is more to life than the phone, getting them involved with improving other lives, and above all else making a difference!

Doing something rather than complaining as most of us do, me too.

Thank you to St. Bernard’s High School for making this happen!!
