Press release from the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Department:

On Nov 18, 2017, at about 1:06 a.m., the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office received a missing persons report for 22-year-old Rebekah Martinez. The reporting party, Martinez’s mother, told deputies she last had contact with Martinez on Nov. 12, 2017, at about 11:00 a.m. via a friend’s cell phone. Martinez told her mother that she was going to work on a marijuana farm and would see her in seven to eight days.

The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office attempted to contact Martinez and other persons associated with her, receiving no response. The deputy followed procedure, following up on all leads and forwarding the case to the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division.

On Dec. 12, 2017, a deputy sheriff contacted Martinez’s mother by email to inquire whether she had heard from Martinez. Martinez’s mother responded to the email confirming that Martinez had contacted her late in the afternoon on Nov. 18, 2017, and stated that she was headed home. The deputy requested Martinez to contact the investigator of the case as soon as possible.

As part of procedure, Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office deputies are typically required to make direct contact with the missing person to confirm status and wellbeing, as geographical and other factors allow. A deputy was not able to make direct contact with Martinez and she was not removed from the Missing and Unidentified Persons System.
On Feb. 1, 2018, the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office received an inquiry from a local resident in response to a news article about missing persons in Humboldt County. The resident reported that one missing person listed on the California Attorney General’s missing persons website was actually on the television show, The Bachelor. The deputy who initially took Martinez’s missing person report attempted to contact Martinez by phone, without answer. The deputy left a message for Martinez directing her to contact The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office as soon as possible.

The deputy then reached out to Martinez’s mother as to why Martinez had not contacted the Sheriff’s Office as requested in December. The deputy was informed that Martinez had attempted to contact the Sheriff’s Office but was not able to speak directly with a deputy. At this time, Martinez’s attempts to contact the Sheriff’s Office have not been confirmed. The deputy provided Martinez’s mother with her direct phone number and requested Martinez call the deputy immediately.

Martinez returned the deputy’s call at 2:59 p.m. on Feb. 1, 2018, confirming that she was not missing and was doing well. Based on the totality of information provided regarding Martinez’s wellbeing, Martinez status as a missing person was cleared over the phone and she was removed from the Missing and Unidentified Persons System.

I guess even a bachelorette needs a side job, but don’t forget to “Call Your Mother” otherwise…well 😉

And somehow you think that makes a difference lol coming from a millennial, follower count means nothing unless you’re marketing yourself. I’m guessing you’re a millennial as well for even bringing up such a topic. It’s not hard to figure out why someone on a reality show eaten up by young women everywhere would have a following. So that means? Birds of a feather, followers probably lack as much intelligence or more than their leader!

And that statement proves true daily. The news is full of idiots who follow The Idiot. And the last Idiot. And the one before.

So, 1:06 am on the 18th is essentially still the 17th for most people. Mom calls in a missing person report 2 to 3 days before Rebekah said that she would see her. Waste of resources.

And not the least uncommon. Just because the police suspect they are being jerked around, they are not permitted to just forget about it. So cases hang around and hang around until all the regulations are followed, even if going that far is not sensible to those outside the department.

Would affiliation with marijuana production effect her status with Bachelor producers?

“Reality shows” like The Bachelor allegedly do background checks on the contestants. Allegedly, because in the past some very embarrassing personal history emerges (an early contestant on The Bachelorette was, in fact, convicted of domestic violence and was on probation) The “missing person” is a favorite to win the Bachelor (a dubious honor) even though she is 14 years younger than the man. (He sees her as fun and spontaneous, sure that’s why)) It will be interesting to see if the show runners ignore the truth (an invaluable trait on shows with contestants looking for true love) or incorporate it into the story line.

So, why didn’t Mom immediately call back and cancel her missing person report? Our sheriff should send this woman a bill for wasting valuable law enforcement resources. Guess ya just can’t fix stupid.

Actually the sheriffs not the mom are responsible, the daughter called and wasn’t able to speak with a deputy, that’s what they say. So WTF? Nobody took a msg??? Isn’t one of the 25 sheriff’s hired under measure Z available when a missing person calls to say she isn’t??? Sounds like BS.

Man I know the HCSO is inept and corrupt, but this is ridiculous. If they aren’t even running those names through an internet search once a month they sure aren’t investigating the missing people cases. Guess theyre too busy stealing peoples estate items to sell to.their friends at the courthouse, the coroner being the one initiating it. Thanks Yager! That’s not a theory, they are in serious trouble with the state!
I hope the state expands their investigation on that to find all the other corrupt crap they do.
I did hear from a neighbor that after multiple break ins where blood was smeared all over their house and our whole neighboyhood called the HCSO, a sheriff did finally come.
They wouldn’t even take my address when I went in to file a report for breakins. A friend got help after her 6th break in robbery.
So if you bug them incessantly and/or out them nationally, they might just respond.
Or if you have some property and nice cars and some pot plants they can confiscate to sell they’ll be right over.

We’ve joked that we should call and tell them there are earth firsters trespassing, remember how many of them would show up for that? Q-tips dipped in pepper spray rubbed directly into activists eyes, while completely ignoring other activists being threatened with guns by loggers. They deputized those loggers on the spot to manhandle protesters, why arent they deputizing citizens to do arrests of thieves?
MAXXAM really made it worth their while monetarily. Way more than anything we could muster.

Arrest them yourself. You still have that right. Just be sure to follow the law when you do.

Statistics are only as good as the people who enter the numbers, and people willing to come forward with info. I’m guessing Humboldt has a statistically typical ‘actual’ missing persons average. There is just a lack of resources, combined with a general law enforcement combativeness that is engrained in our local culture. Those two things combine to form a false missing-persons perfect storm. Many people come to Humboldt with the intention of not being found by their family, or violent spouse, or just plain annoying people. Their pursuer calls in a missing persons report, they get wind of it and flee to their next safe haven, and the case goes unsolved. Obviously this isn’t always the case, but I think it does happen frequently enough here to exaggerate the stats significantly.
