A fire that appears to have started in the Tomo Japanese Restaurant in Arcata caused the evacuation of all Hotel Arcata guests this morning about 8:45 [possibly earlier], according to scanner information.

We have a reporter on the way to that location and will update as soon as possible.

UPDATE 9:14 a.m.:

firefighters consultArcata Fire, Humboldt Bay Fire, Samoa Fire and Blue Lake Fire are on the scene and the fire appears to have been contained.

According to the scanner, the evacuees are being housed at the Arcata Fire station.

UPDATE 9:30 a.m.:

According to Justin McDonald Arcata Fire Chief, the first report of a fire came at 8:32 a.m. The firefighter’s biggest priority was to make sure the place was evacuated. At the same time, the fire was located very quickly and extinguished soon after. The fire, he said, began in the dining room.

After the fire was extinguished, firefighters searched for extensions of the fire into other areas. Now they are dealing with a building “fully charged” with smoke, he explained.

According to the manager of Tomo’s, the fishtank may have been where the fire started.

Hotel guests are being escorted into the building to retrieve luggage if they have to catch flights today.

UPDATE 9:32 a.m.: Fire was contained to the area of the fish tank and a nearby wall. The fire did not extend into other areas. Currently, carbon monoxide levels are high in the hotel so short-term exposure is okay but long term is still not safe.

No word yet on how the fish are doing.

UPDATE 9:35 a.m.: Josh Hand, manager of Tomo said that the tank is full of soot and is cracked. He explained that it has very little water left so the fish will likely not survive. He isn’t sure if the tank started it but he said that is the area where the fire was contained.

Seems pretty quiet right now. Trucks are still there but no one is moving quickly and no visible smoke

Stay in your lane. This has nothing to do with cannabis. Go back to poaching Steelhead on the Matole.

I love that old building and have eaten at Tomo and stayed in the hotel for years, many, many memories. But unless someone spends millions on retrofitting upgrades she is living on borrowed time. This fire isn’t a problem, it is a symptom of THE problem.

I thought it was getting the fish to work for scale. But it could all be a tail.
