[UPDATE 9:40 p.m.] Road Conditions Thursday Afternoon
Caltrans Quickmap is not showing the areas where chains are needed in Del Norte, Humboldt, Mendocino, and Trinity counties as of 3:32 p.m.
However, we know that chains are required east of Dinsmore on Hwy 36 after snowfall these last two days. The weather has also made the road icy and damaged the traffic signal in the federal road construction area. The construction company is piloting traffic through or installing flaggers. Please keep a lookout for them. Tomorrow, the construction company hopes to have the problem fixed.
Both snow and rising water continues to impact roadways throughout the Emerald Counties. Unfortunately, Here’s an update on the county roads in a press release from the County of Humboldt:
There are chain advisories for the following roads:
- Kneeland Road (light snow)
- Barry Road (light snow)
- Alderpoint Road
- [Chains suggested on Bald Hills Road (Weitchpec side)]
Flood conditions:
- Howard Heights Road is now OPEN
- Jacoby Creek Road is now OPEN
- Meridian Road closed at m.p. 0.75
- Berta Road closed
[Williams Creek Bridge at Grizzly Bluff Road (m.p. 10.23) is now OPEN]
We’ll update throughout the day as we get more information.
UPDATE 9:40 p.m.: According to the CHP Traffic Incident Information Page, chain controls are now required on Berry Summit. Caltrans traffic cams show that Oregon Mt and Buckhorn are both clear though as of 9:30 p.m.

Thank you, Shaina!
Kym, thank you for this important information! I was planning an afternoon drive easterly and it would’ve been a very dicey, if I had attempted it. You’re always up the minute with pertinent information from around the county. We depend upon you.
Thank you! It feels good to know we help.
Van Duzen road is not plowed so you better have great tires or chains
And they are calling for up to an inch of snow tonight. Fun, fun, fun
