Man Arrested for Striking Elderly Man and Setting Fire to the Man’s Home and Child Endangerment

This is a press release from the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office. The information has not been proven in a court of law and any individuals described should be presumed innocent until proven guilty:

Abel SommerOn 12-29-2017 at approximately 3:45 p.m., Mendocino County Sheriff’s Deputies received a radio call for service for a burglary in progress with gunshots fired at a property in the 27000 block of Albion Ridge Road in Albion, California.

While responding, Deputies received updated information via radio that a structure was on fire and the suspect was an adult white male still at the location.

On arrival, Deputies performed a protective sweep of the property. During that sweep, Deputies observed a structure engulfed by fire and were contacted by a resident who alerted Deputies to the location of an injured person.

With assistance of California State Parks Rangers, Deputies contacted a 73 year-old injured male inside a residence near to the fire and carried him to safety, where he received immediate medical attention. The 73 year-old male was later transported by air ambulance for further medical treatment. Mendocino and Albion Volunteer Fire Departments responded to the scene and extinguished the structure fire.

Deputies initiated an investigation into the incident and would learn the 73 year-old male sustained major injury to his head as a result of being struck with a blunt object. Deputies located the suspect, Abel Sommer, within another residence on the property and took him into custody.

Deputies determined Sommer was responsible for setting fire to the structure and causing other damage to resident’s vehicles on the property and had his 14 year-old and 4 year-old children present in his custody during the commission of those crimes.

After transporting Sommer to the Mendocino Coast Hospital for medical related reasons, he broke free from his restraints and fled in an attempt to escape. With the assistance of the Fort Bragg Police Department, Deputies located the Sommer minutes later after he broke out a window in an attempt to leave the hospital.

Sommer, who was also on active summary probation, was transported to the Mendocino County Jail where he was booked on the listed charges and was to be held in lieu of $100,000.00 bail.

An alleged arsonist who attempted murder (with fire after the blow to the old man’s head ) only has to come up with 10k? Who’s the fricking judge?

And if he’s guilty, who is allowing this person to have custody (partial or not) of his kids? ?

The corporate owned municple & other courts figure that the guy with the joints will be too lenient in his/her own education and not know about subrogation.
The criminal who really did harm another’s rights, property or life, cannot use his/her subrogation.

MR. SOMMERS MAY HAVE BEEN MEDICATED, AND MAYBE THAT CONTRIBUTED TO HIS FALLING OUT WITH THE ELDERLY MAN, IT DIDNT SAY IF HE DONE IT, I MAYBE JUST GUESSING, AND THATS NOT FACTUAL.

probably the opposite – as in “he stopped taking his meds”. Mental Illness is serious, especially when they are taking prescribed meds for an extended period of time and then stop.

Bail is often based on criminal past not just the charge. I say we drop all charges in exchange for castration. Make this stop

He might win the award for most disturbing mug shot yet. He looks very content in a Hannibal Lector kind of way.

Funny, my first thought was that he looks like Ted Kazinski on the profile.

I just wonder how messed up these kids are from this turd? Hope we do not see his 14 year old in the news doing something of a similar manner! Poor kids never had a chance with this guy as a father. The thing is his children are also victims here. bad and sad.

We don’t know anything except what has been alleged. There was no mention of mental illness or meth. Who knows, maybe he just caught the old man molesting his son, which might explain some extreme behavior on the part of the father.

Omg! Look at his mug & face sores & you might change your mind – besides, your hypothetical scenario still doesn’t give anyone a right to beat up an elder, burn a structure, damage other resident’s vehicles, resist arrest, damage hospital property & act like a criminal on active probation in the presence of 2 innocent children.
Nice lesson in empathy but I’m not buying it.

And Moose, why would you even state the last sentence? You contradicted yourself by pulling something out of the blue after stating that we really don’t know anything. Leave it at that.

So $8,500 gets this focker out of jail. Just like the others. Nice he has kids too. And escape charges. I wish the 73 year old would have pulled his cc and taken care of the threat. If he would have shot the 4 and 14 year old accidently while being attacked by daddy, the Laws in California would have protected him, protecting himself. Word of warning to all the scum: Don’t bring your kids to a felony. Or a drug deal. I see it alllllllllllll the time. You and they will lose.

Wow even murders or this guy can buy his way out. Why do the cops even arrest anyone. Just pay them off. How come the monies raised by all the arrests aren’t given back in checks each year to the citizens of the county. we deserve a refund for the expense of arrest. Must be over $100K per day. x 365 = 36.5 million per year divided by 87k adult mendo citizens equals $420 to each person. The 420 was just a mathematical coincidence. ; )

I’m with you. Makes a whole lot more sense. He’ll buy his way out & all will be fine until he takes a life, because he will. String together a few of the capital words in the report above – wait, I’ll do it for you: ARSON, BATTERY, INJURY, WILLFUL CRUELTY, CHILD, INJURY, DEATH, ASSAULT, DEADLY WEAPON, ADULT ABUSE, BODILY HARM, DEATH, ESCAPE, FELONY. Just another day in the life.
