Sheriff’s Department Releases Name of the 17-Year-Old Youth Who Died After Being Struck by Vehicle on the 30th
The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Department has released the name of the 17-year-old youth who died after being struck by a vehicle on Walnut Drive in Eureka, Saturday, December 30th. His name is Elias Silva.
According to an earlier press release from the California Highway Patrol, at
…approximately 11:29 p.m., Darlene Nancy Johannsen, age 60, of Eureka was driving her 2000 Honda CRV southbound on Walnut Drive, South of Hurst Road at approximately 40 miles per hour. A teenage juvenile pedestrian, of Eureka was running in an easterly direction from the west, residentially lined road onto Walnut Drive.
At the time of the collision the roadways were wet and the visibility was limited to approximately 800 feet due to the fog. For reasons still under investigation, the juvenile ran out into the direct path of the Honda. The juvenile initially collided with the right front of the Honda and then the west raised curb.
Johannsen remained at the scene, called 911 and blocked the roadway to protect the juvenile. The City Ambulance of Eureka responded to the scene and transported the juvenile to St. Joseph Hospital for medical treatment. At the hospital the juvenile succumbed to his injuries. DUI is not a factor.
The California Highway Patrol – Humboldt Area responded to the scene and is conducting the investigation. Personnel from Humboldt Bay Fire Department, and City Ambulance also responded to the scene.
