City of Arcata Invites You to Document Tidal Impact at Their King Tide Community Observation Event

This is a press release from the City of Arcata:

City of ArcataThree days of high tides will begin on January 1, with a King Tide event occurring at 11:37 a.m. on January 2. The community is invited to help City staff document tidal impact information, especially during the King Tide. A King Tide Guide showing sites known to be impacted by high tides can be found at City Hall, the Arcata Marsh Interpretive Center, or for download from the City’s website.

The City also launched a site where crowdsourced photos of tidal impacts can be uploaded, with the photo location pinned on a map. This documentation of Sea Level Rise impacts will be invaluable in the short term as the City gathers information in anticipation of a City Council study session in the Spring. In the long term, this is the first of an annual event recording tidal impacts in specific places over a span of years.

In addition to the 15 locations on the map, we are asking people to take photos at other points on the bay, and in creeks and streams affected by high tides, especially during storms. Locations can be street addresses, GPS locations, or pinned directly on the map.

Go to the City’s website at www.cityofarcata.org and go to the Sea Level Rise page where you can find everything you need. We look forward to seeing you out and about with phones and cameras, documenting the King Tide. Happy new year!

You would think these tides were something new by all the hoopla over them. They are about as old as time. The geologist in me can’t get very excited about slow changes in nature’s rhythms.
