Wiyot Tribes, City of Arcata Holding Interpretive Sign Dedication Ceremony January 6

This is a press release from the City of Arcata:

Saturday, January 6th at 10:00 am.

Please join Wiyot and Arcata dignitaries for the dedication of a new interpretive sign at the Top of the Trail on 7th Street, above HealthSport, in Arcata.

The sign is an artist’s rendering of what the area may have looked like when the First Peoples established permanent villages here in what was known then as Goudi’ni. The sign represents a collaborative effort between the three area Wiyot Tribes and the City to bring forward a perspective on life, culture and the natural environment prior to the settlement of Humboldt Bay by Anglo Americans.

Hope to see you there….

Cool! The longer I live here, the more I appreciate the history of this place.
Especially nowadays, as things slip away. White history is very short here. Native history is thousands of years old. People don’t look over their shoulder into the past very much,or even at their present for that matter. Most seem obsessed with their iPhones and possessions. Consumption, just for consumption sake. Trying to fill their empty lives. Merry X-mas.
