”The World Famous ”Tree House”, Lily Redwood Park, On the Redwood Highway, California [Photo by Fred Mayer]
Take a ride down the old Redwood Highway.
Tucked into an old envelope, these lovely images of our area by photographer Fred Mayer were designed to be sold as souvenirs to tourists. Christopher Bigos, a reader, was recently given this set and was willing to share them with us.

most beautiful ride anywhere in the country
I like these old photos !
Thank you for posting this
My Parents have placemats that are older pictures by Bob Von Norman. He also has some postcards out there
In aw!!
Very nice. Thank you.
Any idea when these were taken? I didn’t do any research on Mr. Mayer, but i would guess the 1940s. Anyone?
The stars on the flag are square, so sometime between 1912 and 1959. Which doesn’t really narrow it down.
It would be cool to see photos next to these old ones to compare the trees evolution.
Or disappearence!
Home sweet home 🙂
The Mather Grove and Bolling Grove shots are stupendous.
Yeah, but you had to drive slow! Where was Cal Trans??? More to the point, what
do those places look like now?
Beautiful!
Beautiful photos, the redwoods are very difficult to capture.
We live in such a beautiful area! Thank you for sharing these.
Lane’s Redwood Flat is now known as Symth Grove. It is right next to the Eel river. The buildings are gone but there is a parking lot.
Terrific photos. Thanks Kym!
Thank you Christopher Bigos and Kym
These vintage photos should be testimony to how these redwoods should be protected for further generations.
