CHP, OTS Launching Statewide ‘Adult Distracted Drivers’ Campaign

This is a press release from the California Highway Patrol:

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Driver distractions have always presented challenges to roadway safety. Over the years, it has increasingly become a more serious problem as in-vehicle technology has expanded. To discourage this dangerous habit, the California Highway Patrol (CHP) is launching the statewide Adult Distracted Drivers campaign in partnership with the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS).

The yearlong campaign, funded by a grant, will combine education and enforcement to combat distracted driving. The focus of the education component is to help people understand anything that diverts a driver’s eyes or attention from the roadway, even for a second or two, can result in tragedy.

“For your safety and for the well-being of those around you, keep your eyes on the road and not on your phone,” CHP Acting Commissioner Warren Stanley said. “Nothing on that phone is worth endangering a life.”

The CHP reminds motorists that it is illegal to use a cell phone while driving unless it is hands-free. The more technology a car has, the more distractions it may present to the driver. Multitasking increases the risk a driver will injure or kill themselves, their passengers, pedestrians, bicyclists, or people in other vehicles.

With this grant, the CHP will complete a minimum of 100 distracted driving enforcement operations and at least 600 traffic safety presentations statewide by the end of September 2018.

“Our goal with this grant is to further educate the public about the hazards associated with distracted driving and ultimately stop the potentially deadly behavior,” Acting Commissioner Stanley added.

Funding for this program was provided by a grant from OTS through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Due to poor heath making driving uncertain, I took the Greyhound bus several times down to San Francisco for medical treatment. From the height advantage of the bus, I could down into the cars. About one in eight people was texting, holding the cell phone in their laps below the door level. These people know the risks intellectually so all the ‘education’ in the world means little. They haven’t had an accident yet so, with creeping willingness go indulge themselves, they will do so more and more until they scare themselves enough.

Then of course there was the bus driver who made several calls from his phone while driving across the Golden Gate bridge.

Maybe the State of California needs to spend less on ads promoting talking to your child or asking who are the people saving energy and more on scaring the pants off cell phone users. Just saying, Jerry Brown.

We should make phone calls legal again…that’s not dangerous, and we should revoke people’s license for texting while driving because that is extremely dangerous. Before the crying even starts: I don’t give a crappy crap what you say, if you can safely talk to a person in the car, you can talk to them on the phone. But texting is another thingie altogether.

Studies show that talking on a cellphone while driving is more hazardous than talking with passengers. The reason being is that the passengers are in the vehicle with the driver and understand why the driver may stop talking. Passengers can also assist the driver in navigating. The person on the other end of the cellphone has no idea what challenges lie in front of the driver. Don’t take my word for it, read it yourself: https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2008/12/081201081917.htm

I agree with Guest, we all have all been educated that cellphone use is hazardous and illegal based upon observation of drivers hiding cellphone use.

The education phase is over! It’s time to increase penalties to match that of DUI offenses, and to make it easier for law enforcement and the District Attorneys office to determine if the cellphone was in use during a crash. It is important that while it be easy to determine cellphone usage that the actual conversation or texting dialog not be available to authorities to view.

Texters and those who use cell phones while driving “… have always presented challenges to roadway safety.”
No. They KILL. If this was about booze or pot or any other drug, the words ‘kill’ and ‘fatality’ would be in that headline. Not ‘present challenges”!
WHY are cell phones given a pass? As a trucker, I saw so many near misses and would assume another drunk. But nowadays I look down and see the idiots texting at 60 mph. Insanity.

My favorite is when the truckers text. You can tell when they are because the truck is Weaving across both lines At 65mph…such fun.
