The wildfires that are burning across Northern California killed 23 people, destroyed 3,500 homes and structures and forced 20,000+ people to flee their homes–many in the dead of night wearing only their pajamas.

Through last night, the fires continued to rage forcing more evacuations and burning more acreage. (See below for the latest detailed Cal Fire maps of most of the incidents.)

In Mendocino and Lake Counties, the fire continues to push outwards in most directions threatening approximately 1000 structures. According to Cal Fire, “32,100 acres have burned in the Redwood Fire, 5% contained. 2500 acres have burned in the Sulphur Fire, 45% contained. There have been 6 fatalities and approximately 8000 people have evacuated throughout the incident.”

Cal Fire is reminding people close to the incident to be prepared to evacuate when asked. Click here for information on how to prepare.
If you click on the Cal Fire image above, you will go to Cal Fire’s information sheet for the Mendocino/Lake Complex which includes the evacuation orders, Evacuation Centers, Road Closures, etc. as of Thursday, October 12.

Yes, and many thx to the ferndale ffa and lost coast hay for taking livestock supplies down. Lost coast hay has my business for as long as theyre open, i am so impressed with their level of giving in the lake fires and now these. When i stopped by to say thanks, they said of course, thats what we do when people are in need.

There are multiple accounts set up at credit unions to donate to that get money to local non-profits, and gift cards are the greatest.

There but for the grace of god/goddess go we. Count your blessings and shift that perspective.

Folks down south are saying that they are seeing minimal aerial firefighting happening, does anyone know why?

Smoke conditions can hamper or ground fixed wing and/or rotary aircraft. I heard that was an issue down there.

Not true. There has been an active number of aerial attacks and surveillance around.

Yes Kym doing a much better job reporting on fire than alot of places. In Mendo land lines , cell, and internet knocked out. Very hard to get updated info. Bay area news hardly covering redwood valley fire, because out of their rating area. Unbelievably irresponsible especially considering lack of communication. Lots of people in their ratings area want info about Mendo fire because they trying to contact people up here and cannot. Even sheriff facebook slow to update info. Thank you Kym.

To our great relief, Mid Mountain is top priority now in Potter Valley. We’re all out and waiting. Kym, you are indeed a bad ass. (I don’t think I’ve ever used that term before!) Thanks.

I live in Willits..trying to find information about these fires has been an extremely frustrating lesson in futility…the phone (cell and landline) and internet service was shut off/cut off just a few hours after the fires began monday morning. We dont have t.v. so we relied on the radio…scanning constantly through the stations, ALL playing music, devoting minimal, if any time to covering the fires in our own and neighboring counties. Here we are day 4…ready to evacuate. cell phone service is working, able to visit your site, and just wanted to say thank you for the invaluable information you provide.i have never posted a comment before, here or on any site..my gratitude to you compels it. bless your beautiful heart

Im heartbroken and also pissed off that our neighbors to the south have had to deal with such horrible fires and no way to call or get online, its absolutely unacceptable!!
We all know the further north past the bay, the less help we get. We need to make a unified norcal movement to demand back ups for communication and the release from contracts for companies like at&t who have let this happen multiple times now. WTF are we paying all these fees and taxes for?? For some ahole exec to buy their 20th home and a new boat??
And they wonder why so many stopped paying taxes into the system. Instead they paid it into local radio, and volunteer fire depts in every watershed.

Tune into your local radio, and we all ought to right now go donate to our local radio stations&the ones in mendo. Even the am stations in mendo are doing fantastic news reporting for the fires.
In the 08 fires, kmud had designated times for updates so you didnt have to have it on constantly, tho most of us did! Make sure you have a watch or other time telling device than a cel.

I would love to find a grant to fund hand crank radios for every household!!!

Humboldt Pay It Forward has a link to donate money to the credit union down there. Very easy to do, and cash is certainly one of the things they will need most. You can even designate which county you want it to go to, or have it split among them.

Daaayum Santa Rosa Firehouse #5 burnt down.

This is crazy, at one time there were over 25 fires up and down the state, all starting on the same day. More are still popping up while others are finally contained or put out.

Thank you for all you do for us Firefighters. You are all amazing.
