Third Confirmed Death in Redwood Complex; Now at 21,000 Acres and Still 0% Containment

The Redwood Complex in Mendocino County now has a third confirmed death that occurred in the initial hours after the fire broke out and the fire area expanded last night.

“There have been complete neighborhoods that have been wiped out,” Sheriff Tom Allman said at a press conference this morning in Ukiah. He also said, “We have a…third confirmed death.” He added that there may be more as investigations continued.

“I am not anticipating any additional evacuations today,” Allman said. But, he said, 1000’s of individuals are without power.

At the same conference, Senator Mike McGuire warned, “We are anticipating that shelters are open for many days to come.” He said that this is not going to just be a 72-hour event. He pointed out the “significant challenge with communication” that is the result of cell phones not working. AT&T workers are in Mendocino attempting to restore communications.

The Complex is now 21,000 acres, according to Cal Fire. The flames continue to push outward in nearly all directions. (See map here.) There is 0% containment as firefighters face another day.

Temperatures in the sixties and reduced wind speeds should help crews battle the flames this morning. But there could be problems later this afternoon. There could be more severe winds coming on Thursday, too.

101 is open–two lanes going north and one going south, reported Caltrans at the press conference.

There will be another press conference at 4 p.m.

Please check Pay it Forward Humboldt on Facebook to see a list of items needed for the evacuation centers. The collection point for So Hum is RRHC in Redway. PLEASE no clothes except warm socks. Items that are not needed make a lot of extra work for the volunteers. Thanks.

high winds knocking down power poles and electrical lines started the fires.

It really shows how many homes burned in Santa Rosa. The smoke down there is black with burnt plastic and tar from houses burning. Even up in Fortuna the smoke smells like burnt plastic instead of the usual campfire smell.

A local weatherman in santa rosa said yesterday that the particulate matter in the air was so thick it was registering as precipitation on their rain monitors.

This thing with AT&T is crazy, they have mobile wifi trucks for natural disasters, where are those?
I would hope that after the 4th time our reps would demand a change!!! Having 911 down during emergencies is completely unacceptable. Theyve had many chances to change it. Suddenlink has multiple lines in different spots to help keep internet going if one line gets destroyed. Its not rocket science.
AT&T gotta go.

I agree that AT&T has consistently performed poorly. Are they the only providers of landlines in county?

Frontier bought the verizon landlines all over the state and are even worse than verizon&Att to deal with.
In rural places with buried phone lines like the gulch, some people are being charged 70-80$ / month just for landline, crazy.

Feather rose in Garberville is asking for blankets and diapers and blow up mattress if you have any, they can be dropped off there. Shanda is always up on helping those in need and getting them to the right place.
