Humboldt County and City Offices Reporting Issues With Phones and Access to Data

Today, multiple city and county agencies, as well as Humboldt County residents and businesses, are experiencing difficulties due to a lack of telecommunication services caused by the wildfires south of us impacting an important north/south fiber-optic line owned by AT&T. More importantly, Mendocino County is struggling to reach firefighters and other necessary personnel during a wildfire that is burning out of control.

The Mendocino County Sheriff’s Department tweeted, “AT&T should have a temp cell tower set up today.” However, for some, that is too little, too late. Hank Sims of the Lost Coast Outpost wrote a piece today, “Two Years Ago, AT&T Promised to End Mass Telecommunication Outages. How’s That Working Out?” that explains the history and the frustrations felt by many in the area with the company.

Meanwhile, here’s what we know about how to reach government agencies in Humboldt:

The Humboldt County Courthouse:

The Courthouse is without internet so they can’t look anything up on the computer. If you have your case number and amount of the fine you owe, they can create a manual receipt.

The City of Fortuna:

The City is currently experiencing issues with our AT&T telephone service as a result of the recent fires. We are working to resolve this issue and apologize for any inconvenience it may cause.

*Due to the loss of our phone service, water/sewer shut offs will be postponed for one week until Wednesday, October 18, 2017 at 10:00 a.m.*

For further assistance please email the department/individual you are trying to reach by accessing the Staff Directory. For non-emergency calls, the Police Department can be contacted at (707) 502-6267.

The City of Eureka:

The City of Eureka would like to notify its residents and customers that our phone system is currently down. The issue is due to a large-scale AT&T outage that is affecting many businesses and residents in the area. If you need to report an urgent problem like a major water or sewer leak or traffic hazard, please call Eureka Police Department’s business line at 707-441-4044. As always, please dial 9-1-1 only in the event of a true emergency.

The City e-mail system is up. Residents may also send an e-mail using our web-site atwww.ci.eureka.ca.gov Please click on “report an issue”.

The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office:

The Sheriff’s Office is struggling with non-emergency calls to main station. We still have no phone or internet access. We have converted the analog fax machine number to accept non-emergency calls.
Non-emergency – 707-445-7298
If that number is busy, call the McKinleyville Station – 707-839-6600
If that number is busy, call the Garberville Station – 707-923-2761
If you need to contact the jail, try 707-441-5129.

at 10 this morn i drove to the other side of the lake on HWY 20 and i passed a convoy of AT&T fiber repair trucks heading toward ukiah .
repair wont happen till poles are replaced and new lines placed . but they are working on it .
sure wish they would lease space on that east line out 36 . i can only call family and friends up there instead of using email , some only have cell phones and they out too .

It’s not just government offices. The pharmacy and grocery I visited today both had issues. I wonder about hospitals and doctor’s offices too. Someone complained that their ATM was down but I personally didn’t see it.

Yep. I’ve been out of cell service since about 5 am yesterday. Having to communicate through Facebook messenger. Trying to set up assistance for friends and family who lost their homes and everything they owned in the fires down in Santa Rosa. 4 friends 1 family member so far, but two friends I can’t get ahold of and I saw where they live on the news was totally destroyed. No one can get ahold of them as they have At&t. No ones seen them either, so they may be dead. But we can’t even begin to try due to At&t not having a backup line. It’s bullshit. They have two lines to here, and just don’t let folks use the backup when main goes down, after a promise was made to remedy the issue! I sure hope this time the govt forces them to do something, seems the only way those pricks will do anything

Think this is fun, let’s hope we never get hit with an EMP or a solar mass injection. In such a case we would have no Communications or power for several years, best case scenario. And that doesn’t even include the nuclear reactors that would be melting down.

I have Credo, which is on a Verizon network and I am having technical problems, breaking up, cant be heard etc. Really, could be my phones, but only started yesterday, so seems to be related to the fires.

I also have a TMobile cellphone. Tmobile is merging with Sprint, so dont know what network they are on. Problems also started yesterday with the same issues, and then went to No Service.

Can we hear more about how towers are being affected in this area, by all the various fires, whether south or north of Eureka? Or if there are just plain outages in the area?
