Sunset Over the King Range
King or Kings Peak or King or Kings Range is the right name but surely we can all agree that sunsets are lovely?
We can debate whether Got a photo you’d like to share of a sunset? We’d love to see it.

Agreed! Lovely indeed. Makes me wish I were there. Congrats to photographer.
We are all Kings when viewing such splendor, thus I decree “Kings’ Peak/ Kings’ Range”‘ it is and shall forever be
Nope, it’s King Peak and Queen Peak – King Range…sorry, I have a little problem with people changing historic place names. The photo is wonderful, from a south-easterly view I don’t often see.
Claire, This is a screen grab of Lentell’s 1914 map of Kings Peak in the King Range. Not always labeled King Peak. Just most recently.
Here’s the map.
I, too, have a map with ‘King’s’ on it, but most of the older-timers that I’ve spoken with over the years have stated it was ‘King’ and ‘Queen’…Hadley’s, Smith’s, and others. I know BLM has ‘King’ on all their maps, but I also have an issue with their renaming ‘Horse Mt. Road’, which runs from Wilder to Shelter Cove Roads, as ‘King Peak Road’. ‘Bull Creek Road’ is another name lost to history as well…now it’s Mattole Road, all the way from Ferndale to 101. Dutyville Road should be spelled Doodyville, after a landowner up Mattole Canyon Creek. I guess I’m just getting old (and I’m still considered a newcomer). Thanks for the discussion, Kym, and all the wonderful photos!
I grew up around here and we said King’s Peak and King’s Range. But, the oldest maps tend to say King’s Peak and King Range.
makes sense.
What would Jesus do?

Very cool mood shot!
Kenny at Ukiah “one Irons” driving range says he is a decedent of the Kings which the range is named after.
Very cool to know there are descendants here still.
King’s Peak is part of the King’s Range. At least that’s how I remember it from the olden days of the 70s and 80s.
Is there still a makeshift landing strip in King’s Range?
