In a disappointing week for South Fork’s girls’ soccer team, the Lady Cubs lost their home and Humboldt Del Norte League opener 4-0 to Ferndale on Wednesday and then fell 9-0 on the road against Eureka on Saturday.

Despite the fact that the Lady Cubs took more shots on goal and dominated possession for much of the game against Ferndale, the Wildcats gained steam as the match wore on when the Cubs could not score and ended up tipping momentum to their side.

About 30 minutes into the game, after a mysterious reversal of a throw-in decision when the Cubs were set up for offense, the ball was instead given to Ferndale who took it down field with numbers up and scored on a twenty-yard shot from the right side.

Moments later, a perfectly delivered pass from the wing by a player many of the fans felt was off-side landed at the feet of a Ferndale striker who beat South Fork’s keeper on an 8-yard shot.

Down 2-0 at the half the Lady Cubs attempted to regroup, but continued to be frustrated despite 3 shots on goal from senior striker Olivia Baffert and 2 from junior midfielder Sophia Wallace-Boyd. Ferndale’s keeper turned in a stellar performance to hold the Cubs scoreless. With just minutes left in the game, a PK was awarded to the Wildcats after a bump at the top corner of the penalty box, and Ferndale converted, making the final score 4-0.

On Saturday South Fork could not hold off the Eureka Loggers. Missing two starters, senior defender and co-captain Daphne Hobbs was forced to play in the goal and South Fork’s defensive line played bravely but could not stop Eureka’s non-stop attack. The Loggers scored 3 times in the first half and 6 more times in the second as they wore down the Lady Cubs.

South Fork is now 2-2 on the season overall, and 1-1 against small schools. They will travel to McKinleyville on Wednesday for a 5 pm kick-off and will host small school rival St. Bernard’s on Saturday at 1 pm.

FOOTBALL:This Friday night South Fork football will host Stuart Hall, a San Francisco private school with an enrollment just over 400 and a tuition of nearly $40,000. Kick-off will be 7 pm in Miranda. The Cubs have not played since their win back on August 25 over Laytonville. The scheduled next game against Branson was canceled due to a heat advisory and will not be made up. The Cubs had a bye scheduled for the following Friday, September 8. According to head coach Andy Olsen Stuart Hall has good size and is very athletic, and is coming off a 34-20 win over a strong Upper Lake team last Saturday. “This will be a very challenging game against one of the better teams in the NCL-3 (8-man) league,” added Olsen.

Very tough luck against Ferndale but this team shows lots of heart and good spirit and will ultimately do well. Thanks for soccer news!
