According to scanner traffic, there are three separate vegetation fires near the intersection of Highway 101 and Humboldt Hill Road. The fires were reported around 3 p.m.

The fires are described over the scanner to be somewhere between 100 yards and a half a mile long, and they have a slow rate of spread. Traffic is backing up in the area.

We’ll update this post when we hear more.

Update 3:35 p.m.: According to the California Highway Patrol incident page, the #2 lane of the northbound side of the highway is closed. Photos below by Mark McKenna:

Update 3:40 p.m.: McKenna reports the fire is out, and fire crews are mopping up. Traffic is still backed up in the area. McKenna sent along this photo of the traffic:

Update 4:35 p.m.: Humboldt Bay Fire reports, “The fire has been extinguished, all units have cleared and the roadway is open.”

I see people toss lit butts out of vehicles everyday on the safety corridor, but multiple fires sounds like a chain, although there is a breakdown lane, so now i’m thinking arson. when I smoked I kept a butt jar, usually a Snapple (glass/metal lid). it keeps the vehicle smelling not as bad and you don’t set fire to the side of the road. I started using the butt jar after setting fire to the side of the road, luckily it was a median on 101. I probably should patent before it goes mainstream like the swifter I invented (paper towel, 409 and a broom).

I too am a smoker, keep a power-bait jar in my pocket for the butts. I dont want a fire caused by me throwing one out the window Good Job on the “Butt-bottle!!! Dry grass and lit-cigeretts dont mix well

That was my thoughts exactly. I was driving South before any fire crews showed up and it looked like at least SIX different fires all on the edge of the asphalt with LOTS of smoke. Had to be some kind of continuous sparking from the slow lane and not from a cigarette or the like.

Even though a smoker myself, I would have no problem with fining those who toss butts out their windows. NO excuse for that idiocy.

On LOCO, this same story says there was someone with a rope around their neck on the Herrick Overpass at the same time. Any connection or even truth to this story?
