Just before 5:30 p.m., a 14-year-old boy struck by a vehicle in the Shelter Cove area near the intersection of Lower Pacific Drive and Dolphin Drive.

The boy is conscious and breathing, according to scanner traffic. However, he reportedly has several injuries–including a head laceration and scratches.

UPDATE 5:53 p.m.: Reach medical helicopter has been requested and is expected to land nearby at 6:20 p.m.

UPDATE 7 p.m.: Reach helicopter has left the Cove.

UPDATE 8:57 p.m.: According to Shelter Cove Fire’s Public Information Officer, Cheryl Antony, the boy was riding a bike with no brakes and he was not wearing a helmet. “He kinda ran a stop sign on Dolphin and hit a passing vehicle on Lower Pacific,” she explained. “You could see where his head hit the windshield. It made it shatter in a circular pattern.”

“Thankfully we had our advanced life support,” she said. “We have a paramedic who has the training and the experience needed to make the right decisions.”

UPDATE 9 p.m.: According to a family member, the boy has no internal bleeding but he does have two to three broken ribs and a concussion.  The family is awaiting the results of the MRI and cat scans now.

“He’s lucid, coherent, and in good spirits,” she said, though he doesn’t remember the accident. She added, “Tell kids to WEAR THEIR DAMN HELMETS when they’re on top of anything other than their own two feet!!!!!!”
UPDATE Monday: Press release from the CHP:

On August 27, 2017 at approximately 1720 hours, a mountain bike being driven by a 14 year old male juvenile was traveling southbound on Dolphin Drive at approximately 10 miles per hour, approaching Lower Pacific Drive. A 1998 Mazda being driven by Patrick Michael Fenton of Whitethorn was traveling westbound on Lower Pacific Drive at approximately 25 miles per hour, approaching Dolphin Drive. For reasons still under investigation, the juvenile fail to stop at the stop sign at the intersection of Dolphin Drive and Lower Pacific Drive and continued directly into the path of the approaching Mazda. The Bicycle struck the right front fender of the Mazda and the Juvenile was ejected. As a result of the collision the Juvenile sustained moderate injuries. The juvenile was transported by Reach Air Ambulance to Saint Joseph Hospital.

The California Highway Patrol, Sheltor Cove Fire, City Ambulance and Reach Air Ambulance all responded to the scene. This collision remains under investigation by the Garberville CHP and alcohol/drugs does not appear to be a factor.

not a hit and run and apparently the child hit the car. Sad. I also feel for the driver who has to live with this.

My husband and I were first on the scene besides the driver, the kid that was hit, and the kids friend. It was not a hit and run and the driver was on the phone with 911 immediately.

Just left the hospital after hanging with him and his family. He is doing well, considering NO HELMET; cracking jokes and making everyone feel at ease. At his request, he is asking for no homework for the next two weeks.

“… WEAR THEIR DAMN HELMETS when they’re on top of anything other than their own two feet!!!!!” This brings to mind some interesting ideas. Ha!
It’s looking like the kid will be all right, or i wouldn’t joke that way on here. Best wishes for a speedy recovery and no lasting effects–other than that helmet advice really taking hold.

Interesting that the parent cares about the helmet but let’s her kid ride a bike without breaks?

Kids will be kids. They reach a certain age and they got the world figured out. How quickly we forget our teenage years and our parents constantly giving advice while we are walking out the door. Sometimes we learn our lessons through trial and error. Fortunately, he has a chance to learn from this lesson.

[edit] how can you even make a comment like that… I know this kid personally, have trained with him ,one of the most upstanding people I have had the honor of being kicked in the head by. I do hope one day you are in a situation that requires sensitivity. [edit]

Maybe this will remind parents to do regular safety checks on their kids bikes.

I slammed into the back of a parked vehicle riding my bike to work early one morning decades ago, it’s surprisingly easy to lose control for just that split second. Sounds like he’s going to be okay, thank goodness.
