75-Year-Old Man Arrested for Murder

Homicide InvestigationThis is a press release from the Eureka Police Department. The information has not been proven in a court of law and any individuals described should be presumed innocent until proven guilty:

On Friday, August 25, 2017, at around 6:00 PM, Eureka Police Department officers responded to a report of shots fired at a residence on the 1300 block of 7th Street, Eureka. The caller, 75-year-old David Alan Kobak, reported he had just been involved in a shooting inside the residence.

Upon arrival a short time later, officers contacted and detained Kobak near the front door entrance. Kobak was cooperative. Officers then entered the residence where they found an adult male victim lying on the floor bleeding from multiple gunshot wounds.

Emergency medical assistance was requested and lifesaving efforts were attempted. However, the male was subsequently declared deceased at the scene. Kobak was later arrested by EPD detectives for 187(a) PC – Murder. The victim’s identity is being withheld until the next of kin are notified.

This is an ongoing investigation and further information will be released as it becomes available.

Kym, if the suspect was 32 years old would you put that in the headline?

‘Curious’, if Kym stopped reporting the local news so diligently on her free website, would you have anything to criticize? It is perfectly normal and common in reporting to give news an eye grabbing headline. It’s a story in and of it self that a man would get to such an advanced age and then commit murder.
Now I’m curious, why are you asking this question?

I have seen big time newspapers typo or put out poor headlines.
For a while I actually Semi trolled Huff Po because they were getting really sloppy.
They are worth hundreds of millions of dollars for some reason.

Curious, if you had a life, a friend, a hobby would you still attempt to question Kym’s choice of wording she uses on her website?

I cannot believe the homicidal crime ( homicides and attempted homicides) in Humboldt County. I find myself asking, how it has become so violent. Sadly, it is well on its way to becoming one of the most dangerous cities in California per capita for 2017.

With Eureka being one of the top 3 cities in the state you are most likely to be shot by police.

And just fyi, we’re not even close to top 10, Eurekas at #46 in the state…..
http://www.movoto.com/guide/ca/most-dangerous-places-in-california/

Now if we were talking deaths by vehicles, thatd be a different story.
The humboldt bubble has popped, welcome to what everyone else has been dealing with.
Really, read headlines from all over the state and count your blessings we’re doin pretty good.
The world is a more dangerous place in general.

How do you know the victim was a male? In another new report they said the police weren’t releasing that info. Ie sex or names of victim or suspect. Just wondering Kym

Pay attention how Kym lays out her articles. If the information is in a highlighted yellow box, It’s an official release by whatever agency that would be pertinent. In this case, EPD. She does not add, edit or correct any info in these boxes. It is a copy and paste text so that we get the info released. The info she is reporting on and writing in her own words will not be highlighted in a box.

@Curious, If a man in his 20’s or 30’s murdered someone in Humboldt sadly it wouldn’t be big news. That’s tends to happen rather often. I find it rare and interesting that a 75yr old had committed such an act. So the title is of some significance. For one thing, most druggies do not live that long, so it’s probably not the usual scenario, so was he not all there in head from old age and accidentally shot up someone? Or was it self defense? Hope to see some updates on this one.

Maybe the fact that two men’s lives are over for the most part, and readers are worried about you used his age. Such callousness breaks of doing in the brain. This man was 75 and he worked the hard job of running fishing boats miles out in ocean for a living. He has never hurt anyone before and was known as a loving giving man by everyone who ever got a chance to meet him. He has a family that is hurting for him and the family of the deceased.

Is it? What are the statistics, Kym? How do we rate compared to other cities, and has the rate of violent crime really gone up?

I think it should be noted that eureka had far higher than average crime rates even back in 2012 when the nation was at a all time low . Humboldt was lower than average but eureka far higher than average…
the homicide rate is through the roof. But I keep hearing is compared to Stockton and I think that is abut much… the last years data available from the uniform crime report done by the FBI is 2014 I will attach. If you look at overall violent crime rate … Stockton has about 300,000 and have a violent crime rate of 4000 in comparison for the same year 2014 Eureka has a pop of about 27000 and a violent crime rate of 145 now lets do the math. 12x hum pop rate is 324,000 and our violent crime rate would be 1740….. and eureka is our city that makes our statistics bad for the county….

https://www.ucrdatatool.gov/Search/Crime/Local/RunCrimeJurisbyJuris.cfm

https://www.ucrdatatool.gov/Search/Crime/Local/RunCrimeJurisbyJuris.cfm

There will always be variance over years and I agree crime is going up in Humboldt but really doesn’t compare to places like Stockton. Yes we had a few more murders given the population and far less agrivated assaults. But if u think of the big pic we had less than half the violent crime that Stockton does.
I know there are different reporting systems than the ucr ….. no matter what it is easy to take one number out of context and act like it is some big significant enough when it doesn’t. It’s statistics you can make it look however u want. We actually historically have the lowest crime rates of the whole state and would probably still be on that track of it weren’t for eureka…. I could write it Humboldt county historically one of the safest counties in California !
I would like the da to get to procecuting and dealing with our ramped Robery rate. But I could also write about the rape rate that is far higher than Stockton which seems crazy never new that before… okay focus on rapes first Humboldt county then get to the robers…. and we’ll be back on our way to being the safest place in California. And I think Humboldt populations are not likely to be accurate. Just a thought, the census people broke down and didn’t go all the way out my road…. it’s a rural area and not so easy to count heads.

I don’t understand all the knitpicking with what details are noted. We are fortunate to have someone who reports promptly, makes every effort to be accurate, and in general is far superior to most large media outlets. Most news outlets barely get the facts and are replete with grammatical errors. Keep up the great work Kym!

Honestly, I was hoping he nailed one of the Eureka zombies trying to break into his house since it doesn’t seem to be illegal enough here in Humboldt to actually keep someone in jail for more than a day or so. I was gonna give the old man props for taking advantage of his right to protect himself in his home. Unfortunately, with murder charges being filed, It’s not looking that way. I guess we will find out the full story soon enough.
