Otterly Amazing
County Line Wild.
A family of otters in Shelter Cove was captured by Talia Rose who displays her photos at “This family was a mom, two pups, and one of last year’s female pups,” Rose explained. “Males do not stay with the family but females often do.”
These otters found a meal near the fish cleaning station when Rose caught them on camera. This worries her. “Those otters are used to people but otters should not be!”
Rose is worried about the otters but she is also worried about their human watchers. “Otters can be vicious and should not be approached,” she said. “Keep a safe distance and respect that they are wild animals.”

Fantastic!
Sea badgers. Thats what i call em…cute, hairy sea badgers.
This bunch is pretty “tame” already. My wife and I were eating at the Shelter Cove Deli a couple years ago and here comes an otter cruising the tables like a hopeful dog. It caused quite a bit of excitement. After doing the rounds it headed off in the direction of the golf course.
I’ve met them on beach walks with my dog and had them follow me almost a half mile swimming just a few feet offshore where the dog won’t (usually) try to bother them. On another walk, this time on the golf course, 5 of them were in the reclaimed water pond swimming around and diving, I assume for food. They seemed unconcerned about me or my dog (once she shut up) and we watched them do their thing for several minutes. I returned with a camera just as they were coming under the fence at a spot where a path indicated regular use.
They sure are cute little buggers!
Here’s the photo Charlie snapped.
I love them
Their adorable, and fun to watch.my grand children love them.thanks for the great photos!!!
back in the 80s i once went swimming with my old pup at indian valley reservoir . swam out to half submerged tree and we sat on a limb . soon i had something brush my feet and pup stood up looking down . then pup jumped in and swam under water chasing it . then both otter and pup swam in circles and looked like they playing tag . it was fun play time for pup . and a blast for me to watch .
and then 10 minutes later the otter was gone
Lucky!
Awww
Great photo’s Talia!
sea otters?
Look like river otters to me.
opportunistic river otters. Trinidad also has them were the guides clean the fish. you really can’t blame them.
Yes, the Trinidad otters are resident on Little River. They have been feeding at Trinidad at least since early 1976 when I first arrived in Humboldt and visited the pier and saw them.
I look for them every time we go there.
And to close, thanks for the great photos, Talia.
They are a ball. When we have visitors we always take them to the pier and they often show up and put on a show. They love to crawl under and around the tarps fishermen leave on their boats. They will check out anything new or different. Keep the pier clean too!
I saw one in the middle of the lost coast once as well.
River Otters. Sea Otters are extinct in our area. But the river otters do live and play in the ocean near the mouths of rivers (and fish cleaning stations!)
Another ditto. Apparently they are river otters that occasionally establish in marine environments, especially when fish or other foods are abundant. Great pictures. Delightful critters.
A “sea” otter is like calling a stellhead a trout. POtatO or patatO.
I would love to have one as a pet.
Looks like the Salmon bite in on out of Shelter Cove
I have river otters that come right behind my place. My neighbor has a dock and they’re always getting on it and rolling around. Whats really neat is when they bring their pups. I don’t really know if that’s the proper name for their babies. Whatever, I just want to tweak their little cheeks.
Humboldt State is asking for reports of otter sightings.

I love to put those salmon back bones in the smoker. Lots of fine eating, but I’m willing to share this time.
Smart otters to hang out at a fish cleaning station!
Nice! What lens do you use Talia?
You can swim with sea otters at a resort. Last I checked it was $800.00 bucks and booked out for 3 years.
I keep coming back to look at the photos, because they make me SMILE!! MORE PLEASE thank you.😎
I was out at the cove a few weeks ago and she was out on the beach with her pups just laying around
Otters need chill time to
That is Adorable!
What a refreshing and stimulating read! I need more of this.
We saw an otter at Blue Lake while swimming this year. It was searching the rocks before anyone else was on the beach. Amazing.
Awesome shots! Just fantastic. Thank you for sharing. And thanks for the link to more photos. My brother and I, and our friends, used to love seeing river otters in Freshwater Creek and Freshwater Slough when we were kids and we would raft in areas when the creek water was high enough to float.
That is a money shot. It’s an awesome photo. My favorite.
