Making the Moment Miraculous, Or, Why There Was a Dragon Floating on the Eel River Last Saturday
For Xack Fischer’s 25th birthday, he fulfilled a fantasy. For a week, he, his friends and family worked to achieve this lifelong dream–he floated a dragon bouncy house on the Eel River last Saturday.
Do you think that spending a week caulking the seams of a bouncy house to create a few hours of play is a lot of work for only a little payoff?
Xack doesn’t.
“You can really make a moment miraculous if you take the time to set it up right,” he explained which might as well be the motto of his Seattle company which created a novelty item called Rainworks. The item allows everyone to create art that only appears when it gets wet.
While Xack was home in Humboldt, he and his family used the Rainworks Invisible spray developed by his co-founder to create a hidden surprise in Garberville.
“We decorated the town square,” Xack explained. “My little sister did a few turtle designs.” But there were many other designs stenciled onto the square. When the area is dry, it looks normal but should water from rain or another source touch the area, then the surprise designs appear.
Xack’s partner in Shenanigans, LLC, Peregrine Church, said in a Ted Talk that Xack helped write was that one of their motivations for their company is to facilitate people making their own unique creations to make the world a more interesting place.
Creating a novel experience was part of the motivation in floating Puff the bouncy house dragon. Before Xack’s family owned Organic Grace in Garberville, they owned a bouncy house business.
“Puff has been in my life since I can remember,” Xack said. “When I was two, it was green. My mom would rent it out around Humboldt. I would help my mom drop him off and set him up. When I was around 10, we got this [purple dragon bouncy house.] When I was 15 or 16, going to school at South Fork, my first job was taking over the [bouncy house] business.”
He used to dream of floating the bouncy house on the water but was told it was impossible. However, for Xack who has a background in magic, “impossible” seems to mean only that a project will take a little time and effort.
“For me, it has been worth it to put in more energy than people might expect,” he explained. “I like to get people to appreciate the world around them in a new way through having these novel experiences.”
