Driver Dies in Crash That Closed 199 for Two Hours

On July 4, 2017, at approximately 1334 hours, a Honda Ridgeline was being driven southbound on U.S. Highway 199 north of South Fork Road, in the CHP Crescent City area. At the same time, a Dodge truck with an attached cab-over camper followed by a Nissan SUV were traveling northbound on US 199 just south of the Honda. For reasons still under investigation, the driver, and sole occupant of the Honda allowed his vehicle to travel across the double yellow lines and enter the northbound lane, where it collided with the Dodge truck. The Honda continued in the northbound lane where it collided into the Nissan.

The driver of the Honda suffered fatal injuries as a result of the collision. All occupants of the Dodge and Nissan suffered minor to moderate injuries. US 199 was closed due to the incident from 1334 hours, and was reopened to one-way controlled traffic at 1546 hours. The name of the decedent is being withheld pending notification of next of kin by the Del Norte County Sheriff s Office.
