Thanks for the information but I need to admit that I’m not sure how I’m affected. I travel Bell Springs Road about twice each month. From Garberville to family property in Mendocino County and also from Laytonville north. However, I’m not sure where the Post Miles are. Measured from junction with Alderpoint Road? Measured from Humboldt-Mendocino County line? It would have been helpful for County Roads to provide Post Mile as well as some other point of reference. Not your fault, Kym. Thanks.
Mark, mile markers begin at the south county line and move north. (And at west and move east) So that mile marker 1 in Humboldt on Bell Springs is one mile north of the Humboldt-Mendocino County line. So that means work is from 4 miles north of the Humboldt-Mendocino County line to 5 miles north. I hope that helps.
Also, this is unofficial because I am not that familiar with the area but I think that the work is just south of the town of Harris.
Sorry Kim, but, sadly you are misleading people. Although in this case not much harm is done, fortunately. You are correct that, generally speaking, post mile markers increase northward and eastward. However there are many exceptions with county roads as opposed to state roads that you may be more “familiar” with. Bell Springs Rd. is definitely one of them. In fact it increases southward beginning at Old Harris, I believe, and increases to P.M.12.75 or so at the county line. Then reverts to the rule of thumb and decreases from around P.M.26 or so south to the point of beginning at the intersection of 101. They also begin at intersections not just county lines. Dyerville Loop Rd. Is another exception and increases southward from highway 254 to Alderpoint Rd. at P.M. 26 or so.
From Old Harris north through Spruce Grove to Alderpoint Rd. Is confusing because it was Alderpoint Rd. prior to the detour in 1964. It is marked as Bell Springs Rd. now, however, Cal Fire Refers to it as Harris Rd.!!?? and that is what shows on their computer maps!!??
Why is this important? Who cares? You might ask.
It pays to know if you’re on a V.F.D. searching for an incident or if you are part of paid E.M.S. I would say it was your duty to be as familiar with location identifiers and how they relate to landmarks and be able to cross-reference them with your notes or a chart in order to streamline response. That’s how I tried to do it. I hope Fortuna E.C.C. is listening. They could develop that in conjunction with volunteer departments and distribute pertinent copies to volunteer members and the Emergency Command Center. I happened to extinguish a fire up your beloved Salmon Creek on this last Fathers Day by chance…
I’ll look into this and see what I can find out.
Local, this is what County Roads said,
Generally speaking, the zero mile marker or beginning of a County road would start either in the south or in the west (with some exceptions to this rule.)
So a road running north and south would have a starting point in the south. Bell Springs begins at the Mendocino line. This particular closure is about two miles north of the Harris Store.(According to Steve Finch, Superintendent.)
Roads running east and west usually have a starting point in the west and count upward from there towards the east.
There are exceptions to both of these rules. For instance, Briceland Thorne runs east and west (mostly) but has its starting point on the northeast end. And Alderpoint also is an exception to the rule with its starting point beginning in the north from HWY 36.
Kym,
Be careful were you get your info. Some Local Road Workers are notorious for spreading untruths as far as I am concerned, and falsehoods should not be spread. Makes people look silly or worse. Alderpoint Road mile markers definitely increase from Redwood Drive towards Highway 36 not vice-versa. And Bell Springs Road absolutely increases southbound in Humboldt. I would stick with a Humboldt County Public Works Public Information Officer if I was you. Did you notice the culvert work mysteriously moved a mile to the south? (M.m.4.0 to 5.0) to (M.m.5.0 to M.m.6.0).They better not delay too much because that’s “really slipping”. At that rate though just delay it a few more weeks and it will be Mendocino County’s problem!
As far as I understand it the mile markers correspond to you address. If your address is 42500 Bell Springs Road you would be at mile marker 4.25.
When it is done right, yes that is correct.
Actually…
42500 would be 42.500.
4250 would be 4.250.
Doesn’t matter, take as long as needed, thanks for working on the road. It is soooo bad.
