CHP Cracking Down on Speeders This Holiday Weekend

chpstarPress release from the California Highway Patrol:

As our country’s Independence Day festivities draw closer, many Californians will be celebrating with family, friends, and enjoying fireworks and barbecues.  The California Highway Patrol (CHP) is reminding motorists to slow down on the roadways and celebrate responsibly.

Beginning at 6:01 p.m. on Friday, June 30, and ending at 11:59 p.m. on Tuesday, July 4, the CHP will observe a Maximum Enforcement Period (MEP) focused on speed enforcement.  To keep the roadways safe for everyone, all available officers will be watching for motorists who are speeding, driving distracted, not wearing their seat belts, or driving under the influence (DUI) of alcohol or drugs.

“The CHP’s ultimate goal is to save lives,” CHP Commissioner Joe Farrow said.  “Officers will be patrolling the roadways this Fourth of July holiday weekend to ensure motorists are arriving safely at their destination.”

During the 2016 Independence Day MEP, 35 people were killed on California’s roadways.  Of those who died in the CHP’s jurisdiction in 2016, 65 percent were not wearing seat belts.  Regular seat belt use is the single most effective way to reduce fatalities in motor vehicle collisions.

Throughout last year’s Fourth of July weekend, the CHP made 1,118 DUI arrests within a 78-hour period.  According to data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, during the Fourth of July holiday period from 2011 to 2015, there were 751 people killed in drunk-driving collisions.

“Travel at a safe speed, fasten your seat belt, and designate a sober driver if your holiday plans include alcohol,” added Commissioner Farrow.  “These choices could save your life or the life of someone you love.”

The mission of the CHP is to provide the highest level of Safety, Service, and Security.

Keeping marijuana addicts off the road should be top priority.
In the words of Hank Hill, ‘ we’ve all seen the driver’s ed movie, Red Asphalt…’

Call 911 and report suspected marijuana fueled drivers immediately.

I think he’s joking. Few people are intelligent enough to use a keyboard and simultaneously stupid enough to write what he posts here.

Yes, when accidents are almost always caused by distracted, drugged, or otherwise impaired driving, let’s focus on speeders so we can collect easy profits!

DUI is a far greater profit, and just as easy to see as a speeder, plus a lot of people that appear distracted or under the influence of something are on something. Minor traffic stops lead to big things, especially when you have a cluster of asshats that enjoy breaking multiple laws at one time like, driving on a suspended with pounds in the car and DUI……

I have seem three accidents this week, all after it happened and before EPD got there.
My take is the number of crashes is way up. Does anyone have the EPD stats out there?

All the statistics of causes for traffic accidents are readily available online. It’s not based on your personal opinions, it’s based on collected facts. The average for speed caused traffic deaths in the US is 30%. Since we are averaging 35 or 40 thousand deaths each year on the highways, about 12,000 of the deaths are due to excessive speed.

You should be able to drive 65 or 70 miles an hour without the fear of all the idiots on the road that have to drive 75 or 80+. It seems many people are guilty of using their driving privilege as some kind of power trip! This can be deadly. Find something positive like playing a sport that you can put your aggression into.

I was hit head on over 35 years ago by a speeding drunk driver. I was in a VW bug. When this happens to you, it affects everything in your life that is important to you like your health, finances, work, relationships, enjoyment, etc.
I still have constant back problems from this. I also lost my business! Most people don’t understand the word”impact”, until they have to live and deal with it.

SLOW down this holiday weekend and be safe. Maybe leave a little earlier!

I thought it was their job to always crack down and enforce traffic laws, except of course when they are sitting in Starbucks.

Buy a grow dozer, then you don’t even have to look, or stay on your side of the road! Wide open, people will move out of your way. (It’s sarcasm but really That’s how people drive these days, makes me wonder if dmv even makes them take a test)

One of the deadliest sections of 36 will be the new widening of the “narrows” they’re working on now. That will be a green light to drive hell bent. Watch.

Kiss your fuel economy good bye Taurus Ballzhoff and your breaks if you had to feed livestock or deliver the produce from your orchard in your little put put car. You know that stuff people eat. This “idiot ” would be doing more damage to the environment making the hundreds of trips a day in a car then I do with the 1 trip in my truck.! Please take a moment and think BEFORE you speak (type), and don’t label people. Your not educated enough. It’s thinking like that that has government giving tax breaks to “fuel eficant” car owners and doubling or tripling the cost of registering a pick-up. Who’s the Idiot?
