[UPDATE 5:14 p.m.] Multiple Air Ambulances Requested to Land at Leggett School After RV Hit Patrol Car; Northbound 101 Closed
A Mendocino Patrol car has been struck by a big rig an RV near mile marker 96.5 on Hwy 101 in northern Mendocino County about 9:45 a.m., according to the Mendocino Voice. This is north of Leggett near the slide that closed 101 earlier this year.
Multiple ambulances and air ambulances have been requested. Northbound Hwy 101 is closed.
UPDATE 10:54 a.m.: The Mendocino Voice is reporting that this was an RV that was involved not a big rig as initially thought. Northbound traffic is completely stopped, the Voice says.
UPDATE 11:25 a.m.: According to scanner traffic about 10:07 a.m., the Incident Commander distinctly said there were 8 injured and four with moderate injuries.
UPDATE 11:51 a.m.: According to Officer Taylor with the CHP in Garberville, both directions of 101 are under traffic control so expect to move slowly if you are headed through the area. Taylor said one person was “airlifted” out of the area but at this time he doesn’t know the number of victims. [Note: Taylor explained that early information appeared to indicate someone was airlifted but no one was.]
UPDATE 12:34 p.m.: A reader sent us scanner tape of the incident. The injured deputy can begins calling for assistance at about 1.5 minutes in.
The reader tells us,
This is a STEREO feed, so unless you’re using a computer that can select left or right side you will hear a lot of overlapping talking. It was the injured Deputy (“Sam-26”) who had just been rear-ended who used the term “semi” when calling for help.

The Voice had this update: “UPDATE, 10:47am: New information from the CHP indicates that the accident involved multiple vehicles, and that an RV was involved in the crash, not a big rig as initially reported. The deputy involved suffered only minor injuries, but there were at least two people critically injured. As many as eight people may have been involved with four or more injured. Northbound traffic on the 101 remained stopped as of about 10:15am.”

Thank you for the update
Holy crap! Was down in the fruit orchard at 9:45. It is about 2 miles above Hwy 101 N. Heard endless sirens headed north for over 30 minutes, then the Reach helicopter passed over, knew something significant happened. Prayers to all involved.
Oh dear,praying for everyone involved.
Is the highway open yet? I have people driving north I don’t want to have more cars in the way. I hope everyone is going go be ok.
Try to avoid coming up if possible for awhile. There is one way traffic control and the lanes are moving slowly as of just before noon.
My mother was in this accident
I hope she is alright.
We were all very shaken up as we were parked at a dead stop for construction site when we were rear ended. Minor bruising in our car and vehicle totaled. We definitely had angels watching over us today!
I’m so glad you weren’t hurt badly but…what a horrible experience.
I’m so sorry & I hope she is ok. Prayers are with you & your Mom.
Tell your friends to stop for lunch

whats the best app or way to access fire and emergency scanning news ? thanks
I use” scanner radio” app on my iPhone.
I agree with MendoGuest, that Gordon Edwards’ “Scanner Radio” is the best among many available scanner apps. It’s coordinated with Broadcastify.com, the source of 99% of the scanner feeds online, and available for both Android and iPhones.
https://www.facebook.com/scannerradio
(I’m not connected with them, but a regular user)
On a computer the go-to place around here is http://www.broadcastify.com/listen/ctid/194/?rl=rr
Or click adjacent counties like Mendocino on the map to see what’s going on there.
Of course Kym has links to the two Humboldt Feeds near the bottom of her page. Look for the green ribbons with “SCANNER NORTH” and SCANNER SOUTH”
Omg what an awful summer so far in regards to accidents!! So scary to be on the road and so sad for these people
The general area has been a bad problem for awhile now. Is it the road or bad drivers?
Cell phones.
I say both!
Been seeing a lot of LEO turnarounds across 101 with oncoming traffic in this area lately. So many that we’ve wondered if it was a newly popular tactic. We’ve noted it before, but it’s increased as summer was coming on. Wondering what the facts of the respective drivers’ actions were just before the crash.
what does LEO mean ?
Law Enforcement Officer
God help them all. Put a white light around your car when your going to drive.
Ive seen more problems in the work zones with drivers acting idiotic. I dont know what else can be done when electronic signs, regular signs, and multiple sized orange cones dont work. When you see a sign saying merge, then pay attention. When you see the orange cones, slow down. When it says be ready to stop them really be ready to!!
I bet the rv didnt slow down enough before a curve that had stopped traffic at that new stoplight at the slide.
I believe during the day there are two flaggers on each end of the slide. They were stopping traffic in both directions for 30-60 min yesterday.
YES there was! I was apart of this crash
I was apart of this 5 years ago today! The RV did NOT slow down as they came around the curve so as a result slammed into the vehicle just behind us which slammed us into a vehicle and so on. There was PLENTY of warning we were in a construction zone. There was even a guy on the shoulder signaling traffic to SLOW DOWN. Thank God no one was killed. Yeah the RV got to drive off and carry on but our car was totaled and I ended up at the ER with broken ribs and black and blue where my seatbelt came across my intire torso! That RV a did NOT a slow down one bit. Good thing he had insurance!
I didn’t hear anything from Dan, the a dope smoking fool , about cracker Jacks, what’s up with that, drive a motor home and f’ up no big deal!!!
