Be Prepared for Closures on Hwy 96 Starting Saturday
Hwy 96 will be closed in order to work on it for 6 hours a day from the 20th through the 25th, according to a Caltrans District 1 Facebook post. The post states,
Caltrans will be installing an underdrain on Route 96 just south of Weitchpec from Saturday, May 20 through Thursday, May 25. The road will be fully closed for excavations from 9:00 a.m. to noon, and from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. each of those days. Motorists should plan their routes accordingly. One-way traffic control will remain in effect at this location through the summer months.

Thanks for posting this information Kym. If traffic backs up in those turns because folks didn’t plan ahead it could be dangerous. With a beautiful weekend on the way I’ll bet lots of out of the area travelers will be headed for thr hinterlands.
I am traveling from Eureka, CA to Happy Camp during that time frame, do they really have the road OPEN from NOON-1pm and after 4pm?? Thanks for letting me know what YOU know from experience….this is our first time to this part of this county.
It says FULLY CLOSED from 9 to noon and from One to four. That means if you come at 9, you’ll have to wait until noon and that’s a three hour wait!
and why are they not doing this work at nite????
Night work is extremely hazardous.
If you drive that route you fully understand the magnitude of the damage.
Having almost being plowed into numerous times while stopped in traffic on the curve in the northbound lane I hope the contractor in charge will spend the money to get an additional flagger for at least the north bound lane of traffic.
I wonder if the powers have taken into consideration the KTJUSD’s afternoon bus runs.
What about the mail truck. We ate on a very tight time schedule. Will we be able to get through. Please
