Avenue of the Giants Closed After Tree Falls Blocking Both Lanes

An old growth redwood fell across the Avenue of the Giants north of Myers Flat about 3:35 p.m., according to the CHP Traffic Incident Information Page.

Windy conditions are believed to have upended the large tree.

Caltrans reports that the highway “is closed until further notice.” The winds, explained Caltrans, “are preventing our crews from beginning removal. Traffic will be detoured onto US 101.”

The CHP Traffic Incident Information Page stated that the “road has been compromised and …may not be ready to be open even when the tree is clear.”

Wish I could have that tree, putting an addition/attic conversion on my 1882 Victorian.

Good thing they had the foresight to build that Avenue bi-pass road a half century ago!

One fell across 36 in Carlotta today as we’ll. Power went out about 2, came back around 6. No phone no light no motor car, as primitively as can be. Didn’t see it. More than likely just a crappy old plane. Minor pine in the ass. Still no land line at 9:45.

Weird. I believe I may have taken a picture of that tree (and my buddy) exactly 7 days ago.

Noted because of the cut logs on the left side.

That is weird. You can prove it was alive & standing if ever the need arises! 🙂 I love coincidences such as yours. Thanks for sharing.

Such a shame when one of these gentle giants falls.
I have loved driving or even riding through these huge trees since my first trip in 1966 and have had dozens and dozens since.

Those roots haven’t seen sunlight for like 1,500 years!

I live on the East Coast and visited the Redwood forest. It is one of Mother Nature’s Gift to us. We need to take care of them.
